EDMOND, Okla. – No. 10 West Texas A&M's rally came up short as they dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader to No. 13 Oklahoma Christian at Tom Heath Field in Edmond, Okla. After dropping the opening game 9-1 in five innings, WT homered three times in the top of the seventh before eventually falling 6-5 in the nightcap.
THE BASICS
Game 1 Score: No.13 Oklahoma Christian 9, No. 10 West Texas A&M 1 (5 Inn.)
The Lady Buffs stranded two runners in the top of the first inning before the Eagles used a 3-run home run from Kylie Janzen in the bottom half of the inning to put WT in an early 3-0 deficit. The deficit would grow to 5-0 in the second inning when Tristyn Hamilton and Hannah Pate scored following a pair of errors from the Lady Buffs.
Ruby Salzman got WT on the board in the top of the third as the redshirt sophomore came around to score following a one-out single to left field. She would steal second before
Alyx Cordell drove in her eighth run of the weekend with a single to the opposite field in right.
OC would score two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth to push the lead to 9-1. WT needed to score at least one run in the top of the fifth to keep the game going but went were unable to get a hit on OC's Kali Crandall.
Emilee Wilson fell to 7-5 on the season as the redshirt sophomore allowed five runs, three earned, in an inning of work.
Halle Lytal and Josey Nicholas combined for 3 innings out of the bullpen allowing four runs, four earned, on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts.
THE BASICS
Game 2 Score: No. 13 Oklahoma Christian 6, No. 10 West Texas A&M 5
The Lady Buffs got off to a better start in game two as Salzman scored after reaching based on a fielder's choice.
Erica Vessels single put runners on first and second with one out before they both advanced a base on Cordell's ground out to first base.
Gabriella Valforte was up next and drove in her 30th run of the season with an infield single.
OC would respond in the bottom of the second with a two-run double from Aaliyah Brown to make it 2-1 in favor of the home team. They would to their lead in the bottom of the fourth on a RBI double from Brianna Robinson.
Salzman would reach base for a second time in the top of the fifth on a throwing error. After stealing a base, she came around to score on Cordell's sac bunt to cut the deficit to one run, 3-2.
It was a 6-2 game in the top of the seventh when
Shanna McBroom led the inning off with her sixth home run of the season. Salzman would ground out to the shortstop for the first out of the inning followed by another home run from the Lay Buffs, this time from Vessels. Valforte would homer to left center two batters later to make it a one-run game, 6-5.
Madison Johnson reached base on an error but Maddie Giedel grounded out to end the comeback.
Kyra Lair went the distance in the circle for the Lady Buffs allowing six runs, six earned, on eight hits and one walk with three strikeouts.
UP NEXT
The Lady Buffs continue their eight-game road trip on Friday, April 16, with a doubleheader against Midwestern State. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.at Mustang Park.
