No. 12 West Texas A&M Return to Win Column, Sweep Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas - No. 12 West Texas A&M ended a three-game losing streak on Friday evening with a pair of road wins over Midwestern State. Kyra Lair was one out away from a no-hitter as WT won game one, 5-1, followed by a three RBI performance from Ruby Salzman in the nightcap, 5-2, as the Lady Buffs improved to 24-10 overall and 12-10 in Lone Star Conference play.

THE BASICS
Game 1 Score: West Texas A&M 5, Midwestern State 1

The Mustangs struck first in the bottom of the second after WT stranded runners on second and third in the top half of the inning. Payton Griffin came around to score on a sac fly from Maddy Holder following a leadoff walk.

The Lady Buffs responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Back-to-back singles from Shanna McBroom and Salzman with one out got the rally started. Their double steal during the next at-bat would cause a throwing that saw McBroom come around to score and Salzman advance to third. Cordell would double down the right field line to plate Salzman.

Cordell would add to the Lady Buffs lead in the top of the fifth with her second two-out double of the game. Erica Vessels singled up the middle before stealing second and reaching third on a wild pitch. Cordell would bring Vessels across home plate on her ninth double of the season.

Madison Johnson's first home run since Feb. 23 in the top of the sixth would push the Lady Buffs lead to 4-1. Lair continued to dominate the Mustangs in the bottom half of the inning striking out Bailey Brenek for her ninth K of the game, tying a career-high.

Salzman hit another solo shot in the top of the seventh to push the Lady Buffs advantage to 6-1. Lair returned to the circle in the bottom half of the inning needing just three outs for her second career no-hitter. The Canyon native got Hanna Hetherington to pop up to Cordell at short before striking out Griffin to reach double digit strikeouts for the first time in her career. Marley Eller would end the no-hitter at the next at-bat with a double to right field.

Lair improved 13-5 on the season with her 27th career complete game allowing one run on one hit and two walks and a career-high 10 strikeouts.
