CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M scored three second half goals including a brace from Asha James as they defeated Texas Woman's 3-1 in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference Championships on Saturday night in Canyon at The Pitch. The win ends a three-match losing streak to Pioneers and marks the first time this season the Lady Buffs have won after conceding the first goal.
The Lady Buffs recorded a shot in the opening minute of the match but were unable to keep possession before falling behind a goal in the 10th minute. Alex Jurado was shown a yellow card for her challenge just outside the penalty area that resulted in Keely Chapman scoring in her second goal of the season on the ensuing free kick.
They found their footing over the next few minutes as James had a shot blocked and Emily Avila saw her shot from distance saved. Hannah Kelley-Lusk also forced a save from TWU's Bailey Heffernon in the 25th minute.
TWU had all of the momentum in the opening minutes for the second half as Jazmine Navarro and Abiigail Martinez put pressure on the Lady Buff backline. WT was awarded a penalty in the 53rd minute for a handball but Noir Hawash's attempt was saved from Heffernon.
James scored the first of her two goals the 62nd minute on a rebound after her initial a shot was saved. The goal was all set up from a pass from Kelley-Lusk that put the sophomore one-on-one with Heffernon. Her first shot at the near post was saved but she was able to slip the rebound across the line to make it 1-1.
She gave the Lady Buffs the lead in the 65th minute on a strike with her left foot. Calista Cordero found James in space, who beat defender before depositing the ball into the back of the net. Kelley-Lusk came within inches of adding another goal in the 73rd but her shot from shot went off the post.
Calista Cordero made it three goals in two games as she beat her defender to Maliyah Mendoza's cross in the 74th minute to make it 3-1 in favor of the Lady Buffs.
James finished with a game-high six shots with Hawash adding five off the bench. Reagan Heelan made three saves to pick up her fourth win of the season.
The Lady Buffs will host Texas A&M-Commerce on Tuesday, April 7. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
