CANYON, Texas – Three different Lady Buffs scored as West Texas A&M defeated Midwestern State 4-1 on Saturday night at the Pitch in Canyon. WT improved to 2-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Lone Star Conference following their sixth straight win over the Mustangs.
After a slow start to the match, WT found themselves with more possession of the ball before Hannah Kelley-Lusk opened the scoring the 21st minute. The senior got on the end of Calista Cordero's through ball on the right side fo the penalty area before sending the ball off the far post and barely across the line.
The Lady Buffs would have to wait until the opening 12 minutes of the second half to double advantage when Cordero scored on a rebound off the post. Ashley Silvestre thought she had scored but her shot went off the post before Cordero smacked the ball into the back of the net for her first goal since Oct. 14, 2018.
It was 3-0 in the 67th minute when Asha James opened her scoring account. Reagan Matacale set the goal up after fighting off two Mustang defenders before James created space in the penalty area and whipped the ball to the far post.
MSU would get a goal back in the 79th minute on a strike from Valentina Carvajal. The Lady Buffs responded with a fourth goal of the game in the 81st minute when Kelley-Lusk latched on to Noir Hawash's pass for her fourth of the season.
Kelley-Lusk had a team-high seven shots as WT outshot the Mustangs, 27-12. Reagan Heelan recorded five saves in her fourth career start.
The Lady Buffs hit the road next week to face Oklahoma Christian on Wednesday, March 10, in Oklahoma City.
