DALLAS, Texas – West Texas A&M fell victim to a golden goal for the second consecutive game in their 2-1 overtime loss to DBU on Wednesday afternoon in Dallas. The Lady Buffs fall to 0-2-0 on the season while DBU improves to 2-0-0.
WT came the closest to opening the scoring in the opening 15 minutes when Calista Cordero's through ball fell to the right foot of Hannah Kelley-Lusk but the senior was unable to get enough power behind the shot to trouble DBU's Adrianna Schroeder.
Reagan Heelan made a play in the 21st minute to keep the Patriots off the scoreboard as the freshman keeper came off her line to deny Jenna Patterson.
Jessica Diaz had a chance to put WT ahead in the opening minutes of the second half but her shot was saved by Schroeder. She played a nice pass to Reagan Matacale, who returned the favor to Diaz's favored left foot but her shot to the near post was saved.
Noir Hawash had another chance for the visitors in the 53rd minute when Schroeder left her goal to stop a through ball to Kelley-Lusk leaving the goal wide open. The senior took one touch and put the ball at the near post that was cleared off the line by a DBU defender. She would see her header just go over the bar two minutes later on a nice cross from Matacale from her left back position.
The Lady Buffs continued to put pressure on the Patriots in the 57th minute with Asha James getting a look in front of goal with some fancy footwork but her shot went over the crossbar. DBU would take the lead in the 61st minute on Ashley Merrill's free header off a corner kick from Jenna Patterson.
Mandy Stricker tied the game in the 88th minute on a left footed strike from just outside the penalty area. The junior took advantage of a failed clearance from DBU as she volleyed the ball into the upper right corner for the Lady Buffs first goal of the season.
Merrill would get her second of the game and fifth of the season in the 93rd on another header, this time at the far post on a free kick from Kaci Parks.
Kelley-Lusk was one of eight Lady Buffs to record a shot as the senior had a team-high four including three on-target. Heelan faced 15 shots and made five saves in her second collegiate start.
The Lady Buffs host UT Tyler at The Pitch on Wednesday, March 3. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m.
