SAN ANGELO, Texas – West Texas A&M heads into the Lone Star Conference Championship match for the first time since 2013 after taking down UT Permian Basin in four sets (25-14, 25-21, 21-25, 25-22). The Lady Buffs semifinal match victory on Friday night moved WT to 22-4 overall while the Falcons end their season 17-11.
WT set the tone in the first set after stringing together a 9-2 run to take a 17-6 lead. The Lady Buffs carried that momentum into the second set until the Falcons claimed the third to bring the match within one. After back-and-forth action in the final set, WT broke away with a 12-7 lead before three consecutive kills by
Torrey Miller punched the Lady Buffs ticket to the championship match.
WT hit .297 on the night with 58 kills on 148 attempts with 14 attack errors while compiling 55 assists, 81 digs and four blocks. UTPB totaled 55 kills on 176 attempts with 20 errors to hit .199 to go along with 49 assists, six blocks and 66 digs.
Miller led the way for the Lady Buffs as the sophomore from Brownwood tallied a match-high 21 kills on 43 swings with just four errors to hit .395 in the win.
Blair Moreland dished out a team-high 30 assists while
Chandler Vogel led the back row with 24 digs to run her career total to 2,578.
Three Falcons recorded double digit kills led by Aquincia Strambler with the senior posting 18 kills on 49 attempts with six errors to hit .245. Analise Lucio had a match-high 42 assists while Daylee Doggett had 26 digs and Stephanie Sanchez a match-high five blocks.
The Lady Buffs advance to tomorrow's LSC Championship match for the 17
th time to go head-to-head with St. Edward's at the Junell Center with first serve set for 6 p.m. CT. The Hilltoppers are on a 3-0 run in the conference tournament with upsets over No. 2 seed UT Tyler and No. 3 seed Lubbock Christian. The Hilltoppers swept past LCU to advance to the championship for the first time since joining the LSC in 2019.
