James Brace Not Enough in 3-2 Loss to Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – Asha James converted a pair of penalty kicks in the final 10 minutes of regulation but it wasn't enough as West Texas A&M fell 3-2 to Midwestern State on Saturday afternoon at Stang Park in Wichita Falls. The loss drops the Lady Buffs to 9-5-0 overall and 5-4-0 in Lone Star Conference play.

WT had registered just one shot in the opening 20 minutes before the Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the 21st on Alyssa Salinas goal. The Lady Buffs were unable to fully clear a corner before Sainas sent the ball low and hard into the net.

It was nearly a two-goal deficit five minutes later but Cheyenne Orozco cleared Emma Bailey's shot off the line. Orozco's last-ditch effort only delayed the inevitable as the Mustangs went up 2-0 in the 37th minute on a goal from Cassidy Savoy.

The deficit would grow to three goals in the opening three minutes of the second half on Kelly Cannistra's goal. The Lady Buffs found their groove in the final stages of the game before James earned a penalty kick in the 83rd minute. The sophomore converted from the spot to make it a 3-1 game.

It was Hannah Kelley-Lusk who earned the second penalty kick in the 85th minute after the senior forward was taken down in the penalty area by Hayden Zuniga. James made it 2-for-2 from the spot to make it a one-goal game with her 10th of the season.

WT was unable to find a late equalizer as they saw their six-game win streak over the Mustangs come to an end.

The Lady Buffs return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 27, when they host Eastern New Mexico at The Pitch. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
