No. 15 Buffs Drop Overtime Heartbreaker to St. Mary’s

CANYON, Texas – An own-goal in the 110th-minute led to a heartbreaking loss for West Texas A&M as the No. 15. Buffs fell to St. Mary's 2-1 in overtime on Wednesday night.

The Rattlers upset the Buffs for the second time this season as they swept the season series, 2-0.  StMU's victory moved them to 3-0-0 in Lone Star Conference play (11-1-0 overall) while the Buffs dropped to 2-2-0 (9-3-0 overall).

WT had 10 players register shots as the teams were nearly evenly matched with WT outshooting St. Mary's 15-14 while the Rattlers led the match with four shots-on-goal.

After an even first half the Ratttlers opened scoring in the 47th-minute with a goal by Erwin Regules from Cian Foley but was immediately responded when the Buffs leveled the score just seconds later.

Moments after kickoff, WT recovered possession and moved the ball down the field as well-placed passes from Stefan Andjelic and Ben Siri allowed Denis Herrera to get behind the Rattlers defense.  The junior headed his fifth goal of the season into the back of the net to make it 1-all.

The Buffs continued to put pressure on StMU's defense recording six additional shots but were unable extend their lead.  In the final minute of regulation, Ricardo Castillo's attempt was WT's best chance to take the match but was denied by the Rattlers keeper Raul Guillamon-Bejar.

WT headed into its third overtime match of the season as the two programs were unable to convert their chances.  With just 20-seconds left in the second overtime, the Buffs caught on a fatal counter-attack after miscommunication at the top of the penalty area led to game-winning score in favor of the Rattlers.

Freshman Tom Miles received his first loss of the season as the Epsom, England native moved to 8-1-0 with three saves while Guillamon-Bejar was credited the victory with two and improved to 4-1-0.

Next up, the Buffs will take on DBU (4-4, 1-2) on Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Patriot Soccer Field in Dallas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. against the Patriots.
