No. 3 Buffs Suffer First Defeat of the Season in 3-2 Upset

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – No. 3 West Texas A&M's seven-game win streak came to an end as the Buffs suffered their first loss of the season after falling to St. Mary's on Saturday night.  The Rattlers 3-2 upset over the Buffs improved StMU to 6-3-0 while WT moved to 7-1-0.

The Buffs opened scoring in the 4th-minute with Rotem Weiss' second goal of the season.  WT recovered possession at midfield and moved the ball down the line as Ben Siri beat two defenders before his shot was blocked landing in front of Weiss who netted the early score.

St. Mary's tied the match at 1-all as Alonso Rodriguez connected with his first goal of the season in the 13th-minute.  WT continued to put pressure on StMU's defense in the first half as Chris Palomino and Anthony Perea's shots were saved by Andre Schlaefli.

Cian Foley would give the Rattlers the 2-1 lead after he got on the end of Deni Cresto's pass in the opening minute of the half.  StMU added to the board in the 54th-minute with Foley's second goal to extend the Rattlers lead.

After drawing the foul, WT brought the match back within one with Palomino's first collegiate score in the 58th-minute off a free kick but the Buffs couldn't draft any serious chances to level the score.

Ben Siri and Palomino finished with a match-high three shots as the Buffs had a 15-13 shot advantage landing seven on frame.  Jacob Plaster made his collegiate debut registering 86:59 minutes as WT's keeper with two saves for a .400 save-percentage.

WT will kickoff Lone Star Conference play on Oct. 9 as they head down Interstate 27 for a Saturday night match with Lubbock Christian.
