Herrera Lifts the No. 18 Buffs Past Texas A&M International in 2-1 Victory

LAREDO, Texas – Denis Herrera's game-winner lifted West Texas A&M to a 2-1 victory over Texas A&M International for the No. 18 Buffs first win against the Dustdevils since 2018.  The Lone Star Conference victory moved the Buffs to 9-2-0 overall (2-1 LSC) while TAMIU dropped to 4-7-1 (1-2 LSC).

After 40 minutes of scoreless action, Texas A&M International broke through the Buffs defense with a 1-0 lead before the half from Johan Portales' third score of the season.

WT leveled the score with Stefan Andjelic's 17th career goal in the 54th-minute.  After the Dustdevils received the foul, Callum Doyle sent the free kick to the top of the post and was reflected off TAMIU's Natxo Faus before landing in front of Andjelic.

The senior netted his fifth score of the season into the back of the left corner to make it 1-all until the Buffs took control of the match just four minutes later. Denis Herrera recorded his second deciding goal of the week as the Honduras product fired the free kick past the Dustdevils' defense to find the back of the net in the 58th-minute.

TAMIU limited the Buffs to their lowest shot count this season with just nine while the Dustdevils recorded five.  Herrera compiled a match-high three followed by Andjelic with two.

Freshman Tom Miles earned the victory to improve to 8-0-0 this season registering all 90-minutes at the post with one save while Faus received the loss to move to 3-4-0.

The Buffs will return to Canyon on October 20 for a rematch with St. Mary's (9-3, 2-0 LSC).  Earlier this month, the Rattlers broke away with a 3-2 upset over WT while the Buffs continue to lead the all-time series 21-5-2, including a 9-3-1 record at The Pitch.
