Herrera Scores Twice as No. 18 Buffs Outlast UT Tyler, 3-2

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M snapped its losing streak on Wednesday night as the No. 18 Buffs outlasted UT Tyler, 3-2, to claim their first Lone Star Conference victory.  The Buffs improved to 8-2-0 overall while the Patriots moved to 5-4-1 with both schools posting a 1-1 record in conference play.

Senior defender Callum Doyle recorded the first shot of the match in the 13th-minute as his attempt was denied by Patriot's keeper Eriksen Mathias.  After 28 minutes of scoreless action, the Buffs opened scoring after Sean Ryan stole the ball away from the UTT defender at midfield before he buried his third career goal from 45-yards out.

Denis Herrera doubled the Buffs lead in the 40th-minute after he took advantage of the Patriots failed attempt to clear the ball.  The Honduras product fired his second goal of the season into the back of the net for WT to lead 2-0 at the half.

In the 68th-minute, WT added their final score of the match after Herrera recorded his first brace off a rebound from Anthony Perea's shot.

UT Tyler put pressure on the Buff's defense as the Patriots scored back-to-back goals with shots by Sergio Sola and Chase Duhon to end the shutout at 3-2.

The Buffs outshot the Patriot 20-14 with nine landing on target and five corners.  Ben Siri led WT's offense with six shots followed by Denis Herrera with three.  Tom Miles earned the start as the Buffs keeper with four saves to move to 8-0-0 on the season.

WT returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when the Buffs set out to Laredo to face Texas A&M International (4-5-1, 1-0-0 LSC).  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Dustdevil Soccer Field.
