Lady Buffs Stay Undefeated in Conference with Wins over UT Permian Basin

CANYON, Texas – The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M registered their sixth straight victory after earning a pair of home victories against UT Permian Basin on Sunday afternoon. 
 
Freshman third baseman Julie Guzman led at the plate with four RBI on three hits while Ruby Salzman drove in three runs. 
 
THE BASICS

Game 1 Score: WT 9, UTPB 1
The Lady Buffs took control of the game in the first inning and never looked back after registering nine runs on 10 hits. 
 
WT would take an early 2-0 lead after Shanna McBroom and Julie Guzman scored on passed balls in the first.  Senior shortstop Alyx Cordell double the score with a two-run home run for her sixth home run of the season.  After taking advantage of a fielding error, the Falcons cut the Lady Buffs lead to make it 4-1.  WT would get the run back with a fielder's choice to score Erica Vessels from third.   
 
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Buffs drove in four runs on four hits.  Steph Elliott sent one deep over the black monster before a grounder scored the runner from third to make it 7-1.  A walk-off double down the left field line by Guzman drove in McBroom from second to secure the run-rule victory.    
 
Emilee Wilson (4-3) picked up the victory for the Lady Buffs as she allowed only one run ( on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks in six complete innings.
 
Game 2 Score: WT 9, UTPB 4
UTPB jumped on the board early with a single through the left side by Ashlynn Bradley to take a 1-0 lead in the first.  The Lady Buffs responded in the third as Ruby Salzman connected with the ball to send one across the street for a two-run home run to make it 2-1. 
 
The Falcons would level the score in the fourth but WT immediately responded with five runs to take command.  Brittany Cruz would score on a triple to left center by Marley Cruz before Julie Guzman singled to bring home Basurto.  Two more runs would cross the plate for the Lady Buffs before a fielding error scored Malaya Delfin and Julie Guzman for the Lady Buffs to add insurance runs. 
 
A two-run home run by Leslie Martinez cut the Lady Buffs lead before Danielle Garcia forced back-to-back ground balls to end the threat.  WT would get the runs back to complete the sweep.
 
Danielle Garcia (1-0) was rewarded the win to record her first collegiate victory on the mound for the Lady Buffs.  The freshman right-handed pitcher allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Buffs will hit the road to for a mid-week doubleheader against Eastern New Mexico in Portales, N.M. on March 11.  First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
