COMMERCE, Texas – Jon'il Fugett tied a career-high with 21 points as No. 3 West Texas A&M extended their win streak to 18 games with a 93-72 victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday afternoon in Commerce. The Buffs shot 51.6 from the floor and 48.1 percent from 3-point range to improve to 27-1 overall and 19-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
Fugett got the Buffs off to a strong start with a pair of 3-pointers as they led 14-9 at the first media timeout of the game at 14:50. Zach Toussaint made an immediate impact off the bench making a 3-pointer less than a minute later to push the lead to seven, 18-11.Â
WT would see their lead evaporated as A&M-Commerce went on a 11-3 run over the next seven minutes to take a 22-21 lead. The Buffs would respond with an 9-0 run over the next two minutes to retake the lead, 30-22, highlighted by a pair of 3-pointers from Toussaint.Â
The Buffs scored eight straight points in the final three minutes of the half to take a 40-25 lead into the locker room. Jordan Collins opened his scoring account with a make from beyond the arc followed by a jumper from Joel Murray before Toussaint connected on another triple right before the halftime buzzer.
The teams traded baskets over the opening 12 minutes of the second half before Collins' jumper at 7:36 pushed the Buffs lead to 21, 72-51. The lead continued to grow over the next two minutes as Murray went 5-of-6 from the charity stripe.Â
JT Warren's back-to-back 3-pointers combined with Fugett's jumper pushed the Buffs lead to a game-high 28, 91-63, with less than four minutes in regulation. Kavon Booker would finish the scoring for the Buffs with a layup off an offensive rebound with less than 10 seconds remaining to secure the Buffs seventh straight victory over the Lions.Â
Fugett tied a career-high with 21 points after going 8-of-12 from the floor, 4-of-6 from the 3-point line. Murray went for 20 points, eight assists and five rebounds with Grant chipping in 12 points and nine boards. Toussaint finished with 15 points, his most since Dec. 6, after going 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.Â
WT finishes the regular season next week at the friendly confines of the First United Bank Center when they host Midwestern State on Feb. 27 and Cameron on Feb. 29.Â
