SLIVER CITY, N.M. – Five Buffs reached double figures as No. 5 West Texas A&M extended their win streak to six games with a 100-79 victory over Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon. Derrick Geddis scored a team-high 17 points as WT improved to 15-1 overall and 7-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Buffs trailed by as many as eight in the opening 10 minutes of the game before a Geddis dunk gave the visitors their first lead of the game, 21-20, at 9:44. Two minutes later, Eric Mosley would hit his only 3-pointer of that game sparking a 7-0 run as WT pushed the lead to seven, 31-24.
WNMU would respond with a 9-0 run of their own to retake the lead, 33-31, before a Jordan Collins' three at 3:44 gave the Buffs the lead for good. The teams traded baskets until a 4-0 run from the Buffs in the final minute sent them into halftime up nine, 45-36.
WT opened the second half on fire making five of their first eight shots to push the lead to 13, 59-46, on a Jon'il Fugett 3-pointer at 15:50. Qua Grant got things going offensively in the second half with a jumper at 14:33 to spark a 13-4 run for the Buffs to push the lead over 20 points, 76-53, with under 12 minute remaining in the contest.Â
With under 10 minutes left in regulation, Toussaint, Geddis and Joel Murray connected from beyond the arc in three consecutive possessions to give WT their largest lead of the game, 85-55. The lead would reach 30 later in the half at 4:54 on a Fugett layup on an assist from Hayden Blankley.
The reserves played well over the final four minutes with Kavon Booker getting a dunk on an offensive rebound and Ty Bryant making his first career 3-pointer. Jake Gerber finished the scoring for the Buffs with a layup in the final 30 seconds as WT extended their win streak over the Mustangs to seven games.Â
Geddis led the team in scoring for the first time in his career with 17 points going 7-of-8 from the floor while tying a career-high with three 3-pionters. After scoring only one point in the first half, Grant finished with 15 points, five rebounds and five assists. Joel Murray and Jordan Collins chipped in 14 points each as Zach Toussaint reached double figures for the first time in four games with 10.Â
WT returns home for a pair of games next week beginning on Thursday, Jan. 16, with a showdown against Angelo State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the First United Bank Center.Â
