Balanced Attack Leads the Lady Buffs Past St. Edward’s in Five Sets

AUSTIN, Texas – West Texas A&M's Torrey Miller and Selena Batiste combined for 46 kills on Friday night as the Lady Buffs outlasted the St. Edward's Hilltoppers in a five-set Lone Star Conference thriller (18-25, 25-18, 25-17, 18-25, 16-14) at the Recreation & Convocation Center in Austin, Texas.
 
The Lady Buffs moved to 3-0 in matches that have gone the full five sets so far this season as they started slow with five attack errors in the opening frame before finding their groove offensively with attack percentages of .405 and .366 in the next two frames to take a 2-1 lead. The Hilltoppers responded with a 25-18 decision in the fourth before WT scored seven of the first 12 points of the deciding frame on their way to a 16-14 win.
 
Miller continued to lead the Lady Buff on the offensive side of the net as the freshman registered 24 kills on 58 swings with nine attack errors to hit .259 on the night to go along with 19 digs for a double-double followed by Batiste with a career-high 22 kills, Sadie Snay paced the WT offense with 57 assists on the night to go along with 15 digs for a double-double while Chandler Vogel tallied 30 digs in the back row. WT finished the night with 70 kills on 173 swings with 21 attack errors to hit .283 on the night with 68 assists, four service aces, nine blocks and 91 digs in the win.
 
Katarina Mendez led the way for the Hilltoppers with 22 kills on 41 swings with three attack errors to hit .463 on the night followed by Melissa McNeil with 15 kills and 15 digs for a double-double, Emily Tran dished out 31 assists in the match while Nicole Grant registered 20 digs in the loss. SEU registered 67 kills on 182 swings with 16 attack errors to hit .280 on the night to go along with 61 assists, two aces, five blocks and 71 digs.
 
The Lady Buffs finish off their Hill Country road swing on Saturday afternoon as they take on the St. Mary's Rattlers with first serve set for 2 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio.
