Corbett K’s a Dozen as the #14 Buffs Shutout UTPB in the Series Opener, 8-0

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M ran their win streak to 10 games on Friday night as the #14 Buffs shutout the visiting Falcons of UT Permian Basin, 8-0 in front of over 250 fans at Wilder Park in Canyon during Lone Star Conference action.
 
The Buffs and Falcons continue their series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m. at Wilder Park in Canyon.

RECAP:
The Buffs got on the board in the home half of the second inning as Clay Koelzer led off the inning with a walk followed by a stolen base and a Darius Carter sac bunt before Jake Pederson singled up the middle to score Koelzer and make it 1-0. WT added to their lead in the third as Nick Guaragna stayed hot at the plate with an RBI single to left to score Kyle Kaufman at 2-0.
 
Pederson drove in his second RBI of the night in the bottom of the fifth as the Amarillo native walked with the bases loaded and two outs followed by a Cade Engle walk to force a move to the UTPB bullpen and extend the lead to 4-0. WT added to their lead in the sixth as Kyle Kaufman lifted a sac fly to the warning track in left to score Keone Givens and run the lead to 5-0.
 
The Falcons showed some life in the top of the seventh with a single and a double to start the inning with runners on second and third before Joe Corbett registered a pair of strikeouts to go along with a popup to Kaufman at first to end the threat.
 
Koelzer led off the home half of the seventh with a triple to right followed by a Darius Carter RBI single back up the middle, Justice Nakagawa drew a walk with the bases loaded later in the inning followed by a Givens sac fly to right to run the lead to 8-0.
 
Corbett picked up the win (10-0) as the senior allowed no runs on four hits with one walk and a dozen strikeouts in his seven innings of work. Chandler Dean tossed the final two frames for the Buffs, allowing no runs on two hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
