McBroom Lifts #6 West Texas A&M to Series Finale Win over Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. – Shanna McBroom drove in a career-high six runs, including her second career grand slam, as No. 6 West Texas A&M took the final game of the series, 6-5, over Cameron on Friday afternoon in Lawton, Okla. The junior has now homered five times in the past six games as the Lady Buffs improved to 9-4 on the road this season. 

WT returns to the friendly confines of Schaeffer Park next week, March 29-30, for a three-game series against No. 11 Texas A&M-Kingsville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday.

For the first time in the series, WT scored first on McBroom's second grand slam in the past seven days. Shayne Starkey and Kourtney Coveney recorded back-to-back singles to open the inning before a pair of strikeouts brought Ruby Salzman to the plate with two outs. The freshman earned a walk to load the bases for McBroom who lifted the ball over the fence in left center to make it 4-0. 

The Aggies would tie the game at 4-all in the bottom of the third inning with a grand slam of their own off the bat of Abbey Warren. Following a scoreless fourth inning, WT retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning on McBroom's second home run of the game and fifth of the season. The Sachse, Texas native took advantage of the intentional walk to Kylee Moore to give the Lady Buffs a 6-4 lead. CU would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning a sac fly by Warren to cut the lead to one run but would be held scoreless over the final two innings as Starkey retired six of the final eight hitters she faced. 

Coveney (2-3) picked up the win in her second start of the season going four innings allowing four runs (0 earned) on four hits and three walks. Starkey earned the save in relief allowing one runs (0 earned) on no hits and two walks.
