  • The Lead: In a tale of two halves, the West Texas A&M football team dug itself a 27-0 hole before rallying in the fourth quarter for a 30-20 defeat at Tarleton State Saturday evening.     
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
               
  • The Buffs had a promising drive begin at the 8:18 mark of the first quarter as the team marched all the way down to the TSU 15 at the beginning of the second quarter.Freshman kicker Alex Schrag missed a 32-yard field goal with 14:12 left in the half as the Buffs went a season-long 17 plays for 78 yards using 9:06 and coming away with no points.Schrag's kick hit the right upright.
  • Tarleton State moved right down the field, consuming 7:35 off the clock as Xavier Turner scored from one yard out for a 7-0 lead on a 14-play, 80-yard drive.
  • WT redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Houghtaling found junior Markel Steward for 40-yards and WT moved to the TSU 39.From there, Schrag missed a 57-yard field goal.
  • Tarleton State answered with its second touchdown – this time four plays, 61 yards using 1:07 off the clock.
  • Schrag missed his third field goal of the half – this time a 36-yarder wide left with 1:31 left in the half as Houghtaling hooked up with Steward for a 37-yard pass and a 10-yard pass on the drive.
  • WT trailed 14-0 at half.
  • Houghtaling fumbled at the WT 15 on the opening possession of the second half, leading to Turner's third rushing touchdown of the game and a 21-0 lead.
  • Midway through the quarter, TSU took over at its 22 after a WT punt and marched down the field as quarterback Zed Woerner hit Del'Michael High for a 21-yard touchdown for a 27-0 lead as the Texans botched the extra point.
  • The Buffs showed life after that as Steward came up with another big reception on third down and the ground game began to start working.Houghtaling hit senior Ja'Quarius Daniels for 12 yards to the TSU 11 on a third and 10 as sophomore Jordan Johnson got the Buffs on the board with a touchdown with 52 seconds left in the quarter.
  • Following a TSU field goal, the Buffs cut the deficit to 30-14 as freshman Brandon Blair scored from five yards out with 9:59 left and, following a TSU punt, Houghtaling scored from one yard out helped out by a pass to Johnson for 38 yards on a third and 15 on the drive for a 30-20 score.
  • Houghtaling went for two on a rush, but didn't convert.
  • WT got the ball back with just over three minutes left and Houghtaling was intercepted at the WT 41 by Elliott Hart and TSU ran out the clock.
 
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • In the first half, WT a season-high 138 yards passing for a half as Houghtaling was 8 of 13 and had 15 rushes for 47 yards.
  • WT was 4 of 8 on third down in the half, but just couldn't hit field goals.The Buffs held TSU to 24 yards passing in the half and 4 of 7 on third down.
  • Steward had 113 yards on four receptions in the half, while Turner had 125 yards rushing for TSU on 13 carries and the two scores.
  • WT tallied 22 first downs in the game and held a 407-359 advantage in total yards, which marked a season-high for the Buffs.
  • Houghtaling was 17 of 38 for 272 yards, one interception and a rushing touchdown.He had 37 yards on six carries on the ground.Blair also had 37 yards rushing on 11 carries and a score, while Johnson had 30 yards on the ground on seven carries and a score.
  • Turner finished the game with 135 yards rushing and three scores, while Woerner was 9 of 16 for 93 yards and a score.
  • Steward ended with a career-high 132 yards on six receptions for the most receiving yards by a Buff this season.
  • Junior Chazz Slatinsky has 11 tackles with four solo stops for WT, while Basil Jackson had 11 tackles for TSU.
  • WT recorded two sacks and six tackles for loss in the game.
  • The Buffs were a season-best 11 of 18 on third down, but was 3 of 5 in the red zone and had two turnovers leading to seven points for Tarleton State.
