STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Behind a career day from West Texas A&M junior Luis Amaro, who went six for six with five RBI and two runs scored, lifting the Buffs to a 13-4 victory at No. 15 Tarleton State in the series finale. WT won three of four games in the non-conference series.
WT (12-2) scored 13 runs on 15 hits with one error, while Tarleton State (11-5) scored four runs on six hits with two errors. The Buffs never trailed in the game and scored nine runs over the final four innings to blow the game open, including five runs in the final two frames.
Amaro, a junior infielder from Roselle Park, N.J., tallied two doubles on the day with a home run as he became the first Buff since Brian Schupp at Sul Ross State (2/9/08) to have six hits in a game and is the third do to so in school history. Junior Jimmy Cubillos went two for four with four runs scored and a triple, while junior Nick Canas went two for five with two RBI and two runs scored. Junior Adam Adkins completed the multi-hit game for the Buffs going two for five with three runs scored and two RBI.
On the bump, junior Ryan Larison improved to 2-0 going six innings, allowing five hits, three runs – two earned with no walks and he fanned six. Senior Thomas Garland pitched two innings, allowing one hit, one earned run and he fanned one, while junior Tate Huebner pitched the ninth, striking out two Texans.
Like yesterday, the Buffs got off to an early start, plating three runs in the first to set the tone. A leadoff walk, followed by a single and a RBI double down the left field line by Adkins plated the first run. Amaro got his day started with a RBI single to right and senior Chad Brown, who had a career day yesterday, hit a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead.
Tarleton State's Dylan Lemmons hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame for a 3-1 score and TSU cut the deficit to one at 3-2 in the third, as Austin Call, who went two for four with two RBI and a run scored in the game, hit a RBI single.
Both teams plated a run in the fifth as junior Steven Weber, who got his first start as a Buff yesterday, pinch-hit and singled to left plating Amaro for a 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Texans played small ball as Jose Reyes was plunked by the Larison offering and later scored on a an error by the Buffs for a 4-2 WT lead.
WT took control of the game in the sixth, as the Buffs plated four runs on three hits with one TSU error. A sacrifice fly plated the first run prior to Amaro belting his second home run of the season for two runs and a 7-2 lead. A double from Adkins, scored a run for an 8-2 advantage courtesy of the miscue.
In the eighth, Amaro singled home a run and a passed ball plated another. TSU got one back in the bottom of the eighth, but WT added three more in the ninth for the 13-4 margin.
