CANYON, Texas – The #12 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M trailed five runs heading into the home half of the seventh inning but
Kourtney Coveney's second homerun of the afternoon sparked a WT comeback with six runs to take the 9-8 victory over the Mustangs of Midwestern State in a Highway 287 Challenge Cup matchup to sweep the Lone Star Conference weekend series. WT picks up its 21
st straight win inside of Schaeffer Park as they improve to 26-6 (11-4 LSC) while the Mustangs fall to 14-20 (5-13 LSC) overall.

Shea Ibrahim started the game with a walk followed by a Kourtney Coveny bunt single to short and a passed ball to put runners on second and third with one out,
Allie Smith grounded out to second base for an RBI followed by a
Kylee Moore single thru the right side to give WT the early 2-0 lead. WT used the long ball to add to their lead in the home half of the third inning as Coveney took a 2-1 offering deep to right field for a leadoff homerun to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Mustangs threated in the top of the fifth inning with a pair of singles and a Lady Buff fielding error to load the bases with no outs to knock
Kilee Halbert from the circle, MSU scored a run on a WT error followed by a fielder's choice groundout to the circle to get the lead runner at the plate before a walk cut the lead to 3-2. Kelcee Thompson singled to left field to tie the game with one out followed by another fielder's choice and a walk to score another run, a dropped-third strike plated another MSU run followed by a bases clearing triple to right center to give the Mustangs the 8-3 lead.

The Lady Buffs wouldn't go down without a fight as Alyx Cordel and Ibrahim singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh before a Coveney three run bomb to right as WT cut the lead to 8-6,
Ashley Hardin doubled off of the left field wall and advanced to third on a wild pitch followed by a walk and a Moore RBI single to left field. Moore and
Shanna McBroom moved up 60 feet with a passed ball before a
Maddie Green sac fly to left and a throwing error trying to cut down the runner at third allowed Moore to score the game winning run, 9-8.

Kami Merrill picked up the win (2-0) in the circle for the Lady Buffs, giving up no runs on no hits with one walk and four strikeouts in the final two innings of play.

The Lady Buffs hit the road for a South Central Region non-conference matchup with the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian on Tuesday night with first pitch set for 6Â p.m. at PlainsCapital Park in Lubbock.
