No. 24 Buffs Move to 9-0 with Sweep of Oklahoma Panhandle State

Canyon, Texas. – The #24 Buffs of West Texas A&M moved to a perfect 9-0 with a pair of wins over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Saturday afternoon at Wilder Park. Senior John Baiada had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Buffs to a 13-1 in the first game of the doubleheader while Ryan Larison allowed two runs on five hits over six innings to lead the Buffs to a 12-2 win in game two. WT improves to a school-record 9-0 to start the season while the Aggies fell to 2-8.

The Buffs will return to action when they host regional foe Lubbock Christian on Tuesday, February 21, at 5 p.m. at Wilder Park.

#24 West Texas A&M 13, Oklahoma Panhandle State 1
The Aggies struck first in the top half of the first after Nate Kelly reached base on an error before coming home to score on a single by BJ Henry. Senior Josh Payne worked himself out a jam after loading the bases with one out in the top of the second with a strikeout of Chris Casias before getting Nate Kelly to ground out to Troy Labrie at third place.

The Buffs took a2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning after Labrie reached base on an error from the shortstop with one out. John Baiada then proceeded to take the next pitch over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.

The Buffs added three more in the bottom of the third after Payne set down the Aggies in order.  Bodie Bryan reached on a single to left before advancing to second on a sac bunt from Jimmy Cubillos and stealing third. He came around to score on an error from the OPSU's first basemen on a liner from Adam Adkins. Luis Amaro made the Aggies pay for their mistake as he belted a two-run homer over the left field wall for his first of the season.

Nick Canas came around to score in the fourth after reaching base with a liner to right field followed by a single to the right side by Aaron Vallance. LaBrie picked up his first hit of the game in the bottom of the 5th with a double into the left field gap to bring home Cubillos and Adkins extending the lead to 8-1. LaBrie came around to score on a Baiada double down the right field line. Canas continued his hot weekend as the junior right field sent one down the right field wall to bring home Baiada to give the Buffs four runs in the inning.

The Buffs added three runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach Cubillos led off with a double followed by a double by Adkins to put runners on second and third. Darius Carter then proceeded to bring both runners home with a liner down the left field line. Carter would later score on a double from Blake Weaver with two outs. 

#24 West Texas A&M 12, Oklahoma Panhandle State 2 (7 innnings)
Amaro got the Buffs on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-out single up the middle to bring home Cubillos giving WT an early 1-0 lead. There lead was short-lived as OPSU took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on doubles from Jake Bowman, Dehryen Noriega and Chris Schrarer.

WT scored three runs in the bottom half of the second to take a 4-2 lead with all the runs coming with two outs. Nelson Paredes reached second on a hard hit ball up the middle followed by a single by Vallance. Blake Weaver brought them home with his first home run of the year as the Canyon, Texas native skied one over the wall in left field.

The Buffs added to their lead in the fifth as Cubillos walked with one out before advancing to third on a failed pickoff attempt. Amaro continued to punish the Aggies after LaBrie fouled out to the catcher with a single to left field making it 5-2. Cole Sanchez got WT off to a dream start in the bottom half of the sixth with a triple to left center followed by a hit by pitch to Paredes. Vallance reached first on a bunt as Sanchez nearly pulled off an acrobatic move but was tagged out on home. Weaver loaded the bases with a hard earned walk after going down 1-2 in the count. Cubillos cleared the bases on a 0-1 pitch up in the zone giving him three hits on the day.

The Buffs scored four in the seventh to end the game as Sanchez walked to lead off the inning followed by a single by Chad Brown up the middle. Paredes then loaded the bases with his third hit of the game, this time down the left field line to bring Sanchez home. Vallance hit his first home run of the season on a 2-0 pitch securing a third straight sweep for the Buffs.

Ryan Larison picked up the win for WT as he went six innings striking eight on five hits and two earned runs. Thomas Garland picked a perfect seventh in relief for Larison as he struck out one batter.
