  • The Lead: The No. 8 West Texas A&M men's basketball team opened the 2017-18 Lone Star Conference slate with a 76-62 win at Western New Mexico Thursday evening.  The Buffs had five players in double figures le by a game-high 25 points from senior David Chavlovich and a double-double from junior Ryan Quaid on 13 points and a career-high 20 rebounds.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs jumped out to an early 9-2 lead through the first four minutes of the game capped on a triple from sophomore Jordan Collins.
  • Chavlovich scored in the paint for a 13-5 lead off a miscue by the Mustangs with 12:41 left in the first half.WNMU came back and cut the deficit to three at 15-12 with a 7-3 run, but senior Jordan Evans buried a triple for an 18-12 lead with 8:25 left in the first half.
  • The Mustangs again erased the deficit and a triple from Davis Wade gave WNMU its first lead of the game at 22-20 with 6:24 left in the half, courtesy of a 10-4 run.
  • Collins buried another triple putting WT back in front moments later and freshman Gaige Prim scored in the paint for a 25-24 WT lead with 4:49 left in the half, as the Buffs never relinquished the lead the rest of the game.
  • WT, leading 29-28 with 3:09 left in the half, used the third triple of the half from Collins and built the lead back to eight on a 10-1 run for a 38-30 lead with 32 seconds left as Quaid scored in the paint.
  • The Buffs settled for a 39-32 lead at halftime, using an 11-3 run over the final 3:09 of the half.
  • WNMU cut the deficit to five early in the second half, but a 5-0 run put the Buffs up 46-36 with 17:30 left on an "and one" for Chavlovich.
  • Senior Rylan Gerber hit a triple for a 51-40 lead with 15:39 left and Quaid later put in a tip-in for a 57-44 lead with 12:27 remaining.
  • A layup from O'Shayne Reid cut the WT lead to 62-54 with 7:49 left, but that would be as close as the Mustangs would get the rest of the way as WT built the lead to as many as 17 and settled for the 76-62 win.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT shot just 38.9 percent on 14 of 36 and really struggled from range, going a season-low 4 of 22 (.182).The Buffs were 7 of 8 from the line and held a 26-20 lead in rebounding.
  • Chavlovich had 12 points in the half on 4 of 7 and 4 of 4 from the line, but also struggled from deep, missing all three attempts.
  • Quaid had nine points and nine rebounds in the half, while Collins was 3 for 5 from the field and 3 for 4 from beyond the arc.
  • WNMU didn't have a player in double figures, while it shot 33.3 percent from the field on 11 of 33 and also struggled from deep on 3 of 10.The Mustangs were 7 of 12 from the line.
  • Chavlovich finished 8 of 16 from the field, but went one of six from beyond the arc and 8 of 10 from the line with five rebounds, four assists and two steals for 25 points.Quaid was a monster on the glass with 16 defensive rebounds – also a career-high, along with the 20 total rebounds.He was 5 of 7 from the field and 3 of 4 from the line, with two assists and four blocks.
  • The Buffs shot a little better in the second half on 12 of 28 (.429), but the struggles continued from beyond the arc on 3 of 12 for the half and 7 of 34 for the game (.206).
  • WNMU had 12 points from Willie McCray and 12 off the bench from Eddie Girdon.WNMU shot just 33.8 percent for the game on 23 of 68 and was 4 of 17 from range, while going 12 of 23 from the line.
