  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M football team struggled offensively in a 37-9 loss at Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday night at Javelina Stadium. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT was unable to get going offensively again this week as it tallied 187 yards for the game on 175 yards passing and just 12 rushing yards, while recoding 11 first downs.
  • The Buff "D" was on the field a lot again as senior Trevor Myklebust had a game-high 15 tackles, while redshirt freshman Keimone Davis had a career-high 12 tackles and senior Carter James added ten stops.
  • Junior running back Warren Witherspoon had 25 yards rushing on 10 carries, while redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Houghtaling went 7 for 17 with one interception and one touchdown for 125 yards.
  • Redshirt freshman Skyler Bonneau saw his first action of the season behind center, going 3 for 7 for 50 yards.
  • Junior Kailan Noseff had three catches for 59 yards and the lone touchdown for the Buffs.
  • TAMUK had 420 yards of offense with 253 through the air and 167 on the ground as the Javelinas snapped a three-game skid.
  • WT almost had a safety early in the game as James tackled the return man for the Javelinas in the end zone as the returner appeared to have retreated into the end zone before being tackled, but the referee said he had forward progress to the one yard-line.
  • TAMUK got on the board first with a touchdown pass with 1:05 left in the first as Stehly Reden scored on a pass from Cade Dyal and a 7-0 lead on a fourth down play as TAMUK was bailed out by a holding call in the end zone on third and goal from the six.
  • Early in the second, freshman kicker Alex Schrag got the Buffs on the board with a field goal.
  • TAMUK scored on a game-long 16 play, 75-yard drive midway through the second for a 14-3 lead on a 7-yard pass from Dyal to Torrey Thomas.
  • Houghtaling found Noseff for a 20-yard strike and score on the ensuing drive as the Buffs went for two and failed, trailing 14-9.
  • Following a punt by TAMUK, Houghtaling had the ball hit him off the helmet as the play clock was winding down and the ball went straight up into the air as Caleb Valentine returned it six yards for a fumble and score and a 21-9 TAMUK lead with 2:40 left in the half.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT had three long passes for 96 yards in the first half and the other 11 yards of the 107 in the first half came on 24 snaps.
  • The Buffs had just 80 yards in the second half as TAMUK had 239 in the second half, outscoring WT 16-0 in the second half.
  • TAMUK improved to 18-14-1 in the series and has won the last two after WT had won the previous six.TAMUK improved to 8-6 all-time in Kingsville and snapped a two-game winning streak on the road in the series.
