  • The Lead: Two goals by visiting St. Mary's handed the Buffs a 2-0 loss in the first round of the 2017 Heartland Conference Tournament.  St. Mary's advances to the semifinal round Friday at Midwestern State versus St. Edward's.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • St. Mary's had the first good look as, in transition, Nenad Markovic had a shot from the top of the box to as a diving freshman goalkeeper Alexander Vencel made the save at the 15:00 mark into the match.
  • Junior Ivan Ulloa was awarded a penalty kick as Gerard Roebuck made the save and a follow up header by junior Julio Vargas was a team save as St. Mary's avoided an early disaster 22:01 into the contest.
  • SMU had a great move as Luis Sanchez beat his man down the near side and centered to leading scorer Pato Botello who fired in front of the goal as Vencel came up with another great save at the 27:30 mark.
  • Off a throw in, Botello scored his 13th goal of the season off an assist from Tommy Cameron for a 1-0 lead at the 36:47 mark.
  • Junior Troy Reeves had a header off a corner kick from junior Reece Schattle early in the second half that went just wide of the net for another great look by the Buffs.
  • Sanchez beat the WT defense for a one-on-one as Vencel came out to attack and Sanchez made move around Vencel for an open net score and a 2-0 lead at the 61:56 mark. 
  • The Buffs had another good look late in the game, but Roebuck came up with the save as the Rattlers took the 2-0 victory.
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • Two of the Buffs key offensive players in senior Mirza Disdarevic and junior Callum Challinor went out with injuries in the first half. 
  • For the half WT had eight shots with three on goal, while SMU had five shots and three on frame. 
  • Vencel had two saves in the half and the one goal allowed, while Roebuck had two saves and a team save for the Rattlers. 
  • For the game WT had 20 shots with seven on goal, while SMU had 12 shots and eight on frame.
  • The Buffs had 10 corner kicks in the game, while Vencel had five saves and two goals against with one team save.
  • The Rattlers were led by Botello with five shots, three on goal and the game winner.  Roebuck had six huge saves in the game to preserve the shutout.
  • The Buffs were led by Vargas with eight shots and four on frame.
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • Most likely the season is over for WT as it was tied for fifth in the most recent region rankings with Texas A&M-International as only four teams qualify for the regional. 
  • The third and final public region rankings will be released Wednesday afternoon, with the NCAA Division II selection show slated for Monday, Nov. 6 in the evening on NCAA.com.
