Box Score

Season Stats

THE BASICS:

  • Score: #5 Midwestern State 45, West Texas A&M 3

  • Records: West Texas A&M 3-5 (1-4 LSC), Midwestern State (6-0, 5-0 LSC)

  • Location: Wichita Falls, Texas (Memorial Stadium)

  • The Lead: Two touchdowns in a matter of 24 seconds in the final minute of the second quarter, gave Midwestern State a 24-3 lead as the Mustangs handed West Texas A&M a 45-3 loss Saturday night in Wichita Falls. The game was called with 5:07 remaining in the fourth quarter due to lightning in the area.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Buffs opened the game with the ball and managed three first downs on the drive before senior John Cummings pinned MSU at its own four with a 35-yard punt.
  • The Mustangs used a five play, 96-yard drive in just 1:41, highlighted by a Layton Rabb pass to DJ Myers for 72-yards on a slant for a 7-0 lead.
  • WT moved down the field late in the first quarter and early in the second as redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Houghtaling scampered 16 yards on a 3rhd and 10 from the MSU 22 for a first down at the six.  Unfortunately an unsportsmanlike penalty on WT moved the Buffs back to the 21 and freshman Alex Schrag missed a 38-yard field goal wide left.
  • MSU responded with a 7:07 drive and was stopped at the WT three as the Mustangs made just their second field goal all season for a 10-0 lead with 6:37 left in the first half.
  • The Buffs got on the board as Schrag redeemed himself with career-long 53-yard field goal for a 10-3 deficit with 4:13 left in the half.
  • MSU converted two third downs and one fourth down on the ensuing drive as Rabb found Tyrique Edwards for a 23-yard touchdown pass as Edwards out-jumped sophomore Kevon Thomas in the end zone for the score and a 16-3 lead as Jaron Imbriani missed the extra-point.
  • On the ensuing kick, the Buffs fumbled the kick as MSU took over with 32 seconds left in the half at the WT 35.
  • Rabb threw his third touchdown pass of the half as he went 3 for 3 on the drive connecting with Xavier Land for 11 yards and a 22-3 lead.  MSU went for a two and a 24-3 lead.
  • The Buffs were unable to do much offensively in the second half as MSU scored 21 points in the second half and the game was called with 5:07 left in the fourth quarter due to the lightning in the area.
