Lady Buffs allow late goal, fall 2-1 to Angelo State

CANYON, Texas – Sophmore goalkeeper Courtney Dippel finished Friday's match with a career-high 16 saves but it wasn't enough as the Lady Buffs lost 2-1 to Angelo State in front of 287 fans at The Pitch. With the loss, the Lady Buffs drop to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in Lone Star play while ASU improve to 6-2-1 and 2-1 in conference play.

"I thought we played well at times tonight but we were also undisciplined in crucial moments," said WT head coach Chad Webb. "We were on our back foot for a majority of the first and second half and I think we just got tired. I am proud of the girls for fighting back and getting an equalizer but it in the end we didn't do enough to win it."

The first 10 minutes of the match were a defensive battle as both teams traded possession almost as soon as they got it. Freshman midfielder Marlene van Mourik registered the first shot of the match at 11:07 but her shot sailed wide. The Rambelles then rolled off the next six shots before Ronni Ajeto forced a Sammy Cude save at 27:51.

Although ASU controlled possession for large chunks of time, senior right back Brady Prescott caused the Rambelles problems whenever she got a hold of the ball. The Amarillo, Texas native used her pace to spread the ASU defense and nearly picked up an assist  at 35:34 but van Mourik's shot went high.

"I thought Brady did really well tonight," Webb said when asked about Prescott's play on the right side. "We have been telling her to get more involved in the attack and she did just that.  Although nothing came of that tonight, it still changed the territory of the game. It goes from in front of our goal to in front of the opponent's goal."

The Lady Buffs finished the first 45 minutes being outshot 12-5 while putting three of those shots on target.

The game opened up more in the second half as both teams tried to counter once they regained possession. The Rambelles continued to attack over the top but the WT defense was up for the task.

Junior Peyton Williams made a nice play to keep the match scorelees at 61:33 when she headed a ball away from goal after Dippel deflected a shot from ASU's Elizbeth Rodriguez.

The Rambelles finally broke the deadlock when Demi Tsambasis was in the right place at the right time at 74:09. The senior pounced on a rebound off the cross bar after Dippel made a save on Analise Watson's shot just outside the penalty area.

WT wasted no time finding an equalizer as Kaitlin Steele scored her first career goal at 80:06 on a loose ball in front of the net. van Mourik delivered a nice corner into the box and ASU was unable to clear it before Steele put a foot on it to even the score at one.

Just when it looked like WT had all the momentum, ASU earned a free kick at 84:50 which resulted in the game winning goal. Ashley Exford placed the ensuring free kick right on the foot of a streaking Ally Warren who one touched it past the outreached hands of Dippel.

The Lady Buffs finished the match with 12 shots and two corner kicks.

Dippel finished the match with a career-high 16 saves including 10 in the second half. It marks the third time in her career she has finished a match with 10 or more saves.

The Lady Buffs will now host UT Permian Basin on Sunday, Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. at The Pitch. Links to live stats, video and tickets can be found at GoBuffsGo.com under the women's soccer schedule page.
