CANYON, Texas. – The 2016 men's soccer team got off to a perfect start on Thursday night with a 4-0 victory over Wayland Baptist in front of 200 people at the The Pitch. With the win, WT improves to 1-0, while Wayland Baptist falls to 0-1. The Buffs are now 5-1 in their last six home openers at home.
"You have to give Wayland a lot of credit as they opened the game very aggressive and strong," WT head coach Butch Lauffer said. "But I feel that we reacted well to the pressure and found our groove midway through the first half. Ivan's first goal was fantastic and Pat played well in goal making two crucial saves. I feel we played better in the second half as the three goals we scored were very good goals."
WT sophomore Ivan Ulloa got things started in the 23rd minute when he got on the end of Reece Schattle's pass just inside the box. Schattle's run down the left side stretched the defense which allowed Ulloa to find space just outside the penalty box for an easy goal.
The Buffs continued to control position of the ball but were unable to add an insurance goal until the 52nd minute when Rafael Vasconcellos worked his magic. The junior from Rio de Janeiro found space after receiving the ball from Gabe Willilams and launched the ball into the upper 90.
WT didn't wait long to add a third as freshman Cameron Walker disposed a Pioneer defender near his own box in the 53rd minute. The Humble, Texas make quick work of the Pioneers mistake as he took on the keeper before calmly placing the ball in the back of the net.
Ulloa sealed the deal in the 70th with his first career multi-goal game as a Buff. Schattle picked up his second assist of the night when he found Ulloa free on the outside of the box for his second goal of the evening.
The Buffs closed the match with a 14-7 shot advantage, while holding a 7-1 lead in corner kicks.
Junior Patrick Satorie started in goal making 5 saves and picking up his 11th career shutout.
