Box Score

Season Stats

SAN ANGELO, Texas    In a game that saw a combined three runs and nine hits, the No. 17 West Texas A&M baseball team came up just short with a rally in the ninth inning, falling 2-1 at Angelo State Friday evening in the opening game of a three game series.  With the loss the Buffs fell to 29-13 on the year and 17-10 in Lone Star Conference play, falling one game back of both Angelo State (25-17, 18-9 LSC) and Texas A&M-Kingsville in the league standings.

An early run on a RBI single from David Goggin, helped out by a WT miscue, in the second and a solo home run from Paxton DeLaGarza to begin the bottom of the sixth gave the Rams the 2-0 lead.  WT battled back with a double to begin the ninth from senior Josh Day who saw his first start since March 19th against Angelo State.

ASU closer Graylon Brown relieved starter Matt Shannon following the Day double.  Junior Hunter Henderson doubled home Day for a 2-1 score.  Senior Nick Chapman put down a good sacrifice bunt moving redshirt freshman Blake Weaver to third as he ran for Henderson.  Brown retired senior Mason Shiflett and got junior Troy LaBrie to ground out to end the game for the save.

Despite the loss, WT senior Brooks Trujillo went the distance allowing five hits, two runs - one earned, walked two and fanned four in 100 pitches falling to 6-4 on the year.  Shannon (5-4) earned the win in eight innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, walked two and fanned seven.

Day was 2 for 3 with one run scored, while Henderson was 1 for 1 with the RBI.  Sam Kohler paced the Rams going 3 for 3, but it was DeLaGarza and Goggin who did the damage as DeLaGarza was 1 for 4 with the round-tripper for his sixth of the season and Goggin was 1 for 3 with a RBI.

WT stranded three runners in the game and had four hits.  The Buffs had a runner at third in the top of the sixth as junior Roberto Carrasco singled to left to begin the frame as Day reached on a fielder's choice.  He then stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, but Shannon got a fly out on a 2-2 count to end the threat.

The two teams are scheduled for a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.  Links to live stats and video can be found at www.gobuffsgo.com on the baseball schedule page.
