Trujillo’s Gem Propels Buffs Past Texans

CANYON, Texas –
The #15 ranked Buffs of West Texas A&M started their Lone Star Conference campaign on a strong note with a 5-1 victory over Tarleton State. Brooks Trujillo struck out nine in eight innings while only allowing one run to pick up his fourth win of the season. Mason Shiflett lead the Buffs with two RBI on three hits. The Buffs move to 12-3 (1-0 LSC) while the Texas fall to 6-7 (0-1 LSC).
 
The Texans used smart base running to take the lead in the first inning 1-0. Landon Merka put the first run on the board scoring from second on a grounder down the first base line. WT responded in the second as Christian Loya was hit by a pitch followed by a Jake Fuller single to right before Shiflett reached on a bunt to load the bases. Trace Hansen brought home Fuller to tie the game 1-1 beating out a double play.
 
The Buffs took a lead 3-1 in the following inning when Jason Day, Loya and Fuller all walked before Mason Shiflett singled to right to plate two. Trujillo got into a little trouble in the top of the fourth got TSU's Matt Olive to fly out to right field to end the inning. WT responded quickly and  added to their lead in fourth as Matt Cole started the inning with a double down the left field line before advancing to third on a pass ball. Jason Day brought him home with a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 4-1.  
 
Hansen led off the sixth with a single in the bottom of the sixth before coming around to scoring to make it 5-1 when Day hit into a double play with no outs. Trujillo continued his dominate the Texans batter retiring nine straight before allowing hit in the seventh.
 
Next Up
The Buffs will continue their series against TSU with a doubleheader tomorrow at Wilder Park. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
