Brooks Trujillo fanned a career and school-record 17 Rangers in the win as he tossed a one-hitter in his first complete game as a Buff.
WT (4-2) tallied 11 hits in the game as junior
Cole Sanchez followed his home run performance against NSU with a 3 for 6 outing with a double and two RBI against NWOSU. Senior
Matt Cole went 2 for 4 with a RBI, while junior
Jake Fuller hit his first home run as a Buffalo, scoring two RBI.
NWOSU had 30 at bats in the game with Greg Carrington having the only hit in the third inning. Trujillo (2-0) broke the previous school-record of 14 set by Dylan James on Mar. 29, 2013 at Angelo State. The one-hitter also was the first since James allowed one against New Mexico Highlands on Feb. 21, 2014.
The previous school-record for strikeouts in a game for the team was 16 set against Southwestern Oklahoma State on Mar. 16, 1997.
The game was a homecoming of sorts for WT head coach
Matt Vanderburg as he played collegiately at Northwestern Oklahoma State graduating in 2003 with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education.
The Buffs opened the scoring in the first inning as Sanchez began the game with a double to left field and later scored on a senior
Jace Reese RBI single through the left side for a 1-0 lead.
In the second, WT plated three runs on three hits as senior
Trace Hansen began the frame with a single. Sanchez came up big once again with a two RBI double to center for a 3-0 lead. Senior
Josh Day doubled down the right field line for a 4-0 lead.
WT added three more runs in the fifth highlighted by the Fuller two run bomb and a RBI triple from Cole for a 7-0 lead. The Buffs added a run in the ninth on a junior
John Baiada RBI single through the left side.
The teams will play once again tomorrow at 1 p.m. to conclude the weekend. WT will return home to host New Mexico Highlands Feb. 19-21 at Wilder Park.
