COMMERCE, Texas –  The West Texas A&M women's soccer team allowed a late goal in the second half as they fell 1-0 to Midwestern State in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament. With the loss, the Lady Buffs record drops to 11-6-0 while the Mustangs improve to 13-5-2 and will play the winner of Texas A&M-Commerce/Texas Woman's in Sunday's final.
"This was a tough match for us tonight," WT women's soccer head coach Chad Webb said. "We were unable to get a lot of good chances on goal and that cost us in the end. You have to credit Midwestern State for how they played but we should have done better with the chances we had."
The Lady Buffs had their first chance on goal in the first half at 35:08 when senior Karyn Forbes hit the crossbar. Senior Brady Prescott recorded WT's second shot of the match just two minutes later but was unable to get it past MSU' Courtney Burnette.
WT finished the first 45 minutes of play with three shots.
MSU nearly went ahead just three minutes in the second half when Destinee Williamson found herself one-on-one with Courtney Dippel but the juniors shot rattled off the crossbar before being cleared off the line by Alejandra Dockery. After nearly allowing the goal, the Lady Buffs turned up the aggression in the second half as Katelny Taschler, Khadidra Debesette and Marlene van Mourik all recorded shots on goal after Williamson's shot.
The Mustangs scored the only goal of the match at 76:10 when WIlliamson got on the end of Avery Lewis' pass from the left side to the middle of the box.
WT best chance to equalize came at 88:00 on shot from just outside of the penalty area from Debesette. The sophomore midfielder received the ball in space but saw her shot to the right of goal.
The Lady Buffs finished the match with eight shots and two corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Dippel made six saves on 12 shots faced.
