CANYON, Texas –The West Texas A&M men's soccer team defeated Dallas Baptist 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in front of 225 people as Butch Lauffer became just the 26th Division II men's head soccer to win 300 matches in a career. Reece Schattle got the Buffs on the board in the first half before Jake Wiffen added a brace in the second half. With the win, the Buffs improve to 10-3-1 and 7-2-1 in Heartland Conference play while the Patriots fall to 4-8-1 (2-7-0).
"I am not sure if getting to 200 has sunken in yet," WT men's soccer head coach Butch Lauffer said. "It is a tribute to the administration, assistant coaches and players that we have had over the years. I wasn't even sure that I would be here 26 years ago but I am grateful for every minute I have had at WT. It has been awesome to see the growth of the soccer program and the athletic department as a whole."
The Buffs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead courtesy of a Reece Schattle goal at 19:40 on a strike from just inside the left side of the penalty box. The Plano, Texas native timed his run perfectly go get on the end of a cross that Evan Bozman played across the box from the right touchline.
"I was happy to get the early goal after we started the match pretty flat," Lauffer added. "It was nice build up play by Bozman getting to the end line and then pulling it back. That is stuff that we practice all the time and it was good to see it result in a goal."
The Buffs had two great chances later in the first half to add a second but where denied on both tries. In the 37th minute Substitute Filip Janjic blasted a shot off the far post that was cleared off the line after the sophomore midfielder found space on the right side. Rafael Vasconcellos had another chance at 39:21 after controlling a loose ball in the six yard box but saw his shot turned back by DBU's Sean Bouland.
The Patrios nearly equalized right before half on a counter attack but Patrick Satorie denied Riley Alvey after he had gotten behind the WT defense at 40:45. Satorie stood tall and sent Alvey's point blank shot straight into the air off and out of danger.
WT finished the first half with a 10-4 advantage in shots.
The Buffs came out on fire in the second half as they spend a majority of the first 15 minutes on DBU's side of the field. Jake Wiffen doubled the Buffs advantage at 61:09 on a beautiful free kick from the left side after Troy Reeves was taken down 25 yards from goal. The Essex, England natives placed the ball perfect into the upper 90 of the opposite side leaving Bouland helpless in goal.
The Buffs continued to look for a third but were unable to find it as substitutes Ruben Nielsen and Luke Smith had a combined six shots alone in the final 16 minutes of the match.
The Buffs finished the match with 29 shots, nine of those being on target. They also took seven corner kicks, one more than DBU.
Satorie picked up his 8th shutout of the season and 18th of his career in the win.
The Buffs will play on the road for the first time in nearly a month when they travel to Lubbock Christian on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 4:30 p.m. They will then return home of Senior Day on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. against rival Eastern New Mexico.
