CANYON, Texas – The No. 22 West Texas A&M volleyball team was upset by Lubbock Christian 3-2 in five sets Saturday evening in the final match of the 2015 Britkare Lady Buff Classic. Both teams finished the tournament with 3-1 records.
WT won the opening set 25-19 and won set three 25-19, while LCU won sets two and four 25-23 forcing the decisive fifth set. In the final stanza, the Lady Chaps came out swinging as they opened the set scoring five of the first seven points and a timeout by WT.

Michaela Montgomery cut the deficit to 5-3 out of the timeout, but LCU went on a 6-0 run from there for an 11-4 lead capped by a kill from Ariel Froeschl. The Lady Buffs kept fighting and scored three points cutting the deficit to 12-7 on a miscue by LCU. A kill and a pair of errors by WT ended the match.
For the fifth set, WT committed seven errors and had just four kills for a -.130 average as the team hit .170 for the match. LCU hit .293 and .273 in the fourth and fifth sets, with eight kills and a match-low two errors in the fifth set as it hit .176 for the match. LCU had 65 kills in the match with 33 errors, while WT had 55 kills with 27 miscues.
Individually, Maddie Johnson led the way with 18 kills for LCU hitting .200. Emily Hanaway had 17 kills and hit a team-high .364. Montgomery led the way for the Lady Buffs with 15 kills as she hit .357, while junior
Elisa Bentsen had 13 kills with two solo blocks and six block assists.
The Lady Buffs will return to action at the Florida Southern Terrance Hotel Classic Sept. 11-12 in Lakeland, Fla. Following the tournament, WT will return home for the beginning of Lone Star Conference play Sept. 18 against Texas A&M-Commerce at 6 p.m.
