Box ScoreSeason Stats LUBBOCK, Texas – West Texas A&M junior Josh Day tied the school-record with eight RBI while blasting two home runs in the Buffs' 21-17 victory Tuesday evening at Lubbock Christian. With the win, the Buffs improved to 23-13 on the year, while LCU dropped to 19-17 on the year.
The Buffs tallied a season-high 21 runs on 21 hits, while LCU had 17 runs on 19 hits in the contest that saw a combined seven home runs with 38 runs and 40 hits.
Day went 4 of 7 from the plate with eight RBI, two home runs and four runs scored, while senior Ryan March was 4 of 6 with three runs scored and a double. In all, seven Buffs had multiple hits. LCU's Ethan Kohnle went 3 for 6 with three runs scored, five RBI and two home runs, including a grand slam.
WT used six pitchers in the game as junior Eliot King earned his first win of his WT career going 2.2 innings in relief, allowing six hits, three earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts. LCU's Dalton Silva (2-2) took the loss also in relief, allowing four hits on five earned runs with one walk.
The Buffs scored the first five runs of the game. WT scored one run in the second as senior Jacob Caples began the frame with a solo home run to left center. The Buffs then added four runs in the third as highlighted by a two RBI double from junior Jace Reese and a RBI single from junior Trace Hansen.
LCU plated eight runs for an 8-5 lead in the third inning with a three-run home run, a solo home run from Kohnle on back-to-back at bats, two RBI fielder's choice decisions and a RBI double.
WT didn't sweat as it outscored the Chaps 13-3 in the middle three frames and added three more in the eight for a 21-11 lead. LCU wouldn't go away quietly as it plated six runs in the eighth inning and had runners at the corners in the bottom of the ninth with nobody out. WT senior Paul Lujan came in and fanned two and got a foul out to end the game for the 21-17 victory. He earned his eighth save of the season.
With the win, WT snapped a four-game skid against LCU and it marked just the second win against the Chaps in the past 11 games. The victory also snapped a five-game losing streak in Lubbock as the Buffs' last win at LCU came on Apr. 2, 2002, in a 3-2 decision. It also marked the first win in five tries for WT head coach Matt Vanderburg.
The Buffs continue on the road this weekend in a Lone Star Conference series at Eastern New Mexico Friday and Saturday in Portales, N.M.
