SAN ANGELO, Texas – Senior
Tez Dumars became the 10
th all-time career scorer in West Texas A&M men's basketball history on Wednesday night inside the Junell Center in San Angelo, Texas, as the Buffs fell to No. 7 Angelo State, 77-68. With the loss, WT falls to 3-5 in Lone Star Conference play and 13-9 overall. The Rams now extend their winning streak to 15 games, improving to 20-1 and staying perfect in league play at 8-0.
After becoming the 18
th 1,000-point scorer in program history just last month, Dumars moved into 10
th place on the all-time career scoring list as he now brings his total to 1,123. That passes Eddie Harris who previously owned the spot with 1,111 points (1979-'82). Both Dumars and Harris reached their respective totals in 105 games played in their careers. He now has a chance at very likely reaching the top-five on the list before the conclusion of the season. Dumars finished tonight's game with 13 points to go along with five rebounds.
After scoring just two points in the first half on Wednesday, freshman
David Chavlovich totaled 15 in the second half to lead the Buffs in the end with 17 total points. He also tallied three rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
The Buffs began the contest with three-straight 3-pointer attempts, finally converting on the third off the hands of senior
Miles Gatewood to take an early 3-2 lead. At 16:49, Dumars would tie the game at 4-4 with a free throw, moving him into the tie for 10
th place on the career scoring list at 1,111 points.
Just minutes later, Dumars would move himself solely into the top-10 scoring list as he drained a 3-pointer, giving the Buffs a 10-7 lead at 14:49 and a 6-1 run over the home team. After the next media-timeout, Gatewood would grab a triple and deep two to give WT the 15-9 lead with 10:42 left.
The Rams would respond strongly with a 7-0 run leading into the under-eight media. Demario Mayfield, ASU's leading scorer, would score each bucket capped off by a fast-break one-handed jam at 7:09. The home team would continue the hot-shooting going 8-for-8 from the field before final media timeout of the half was called. That would come after another 9-2 run for the Rams giving them the lead again at 29-23 with 3:32 left in the half. In that stretch, WT would go just 1-for-8 from the field.
After four-consecutive free-throws for WT, ASU would again go on another 7-0 run to extend its lead to 35-27 with 1:08 to play. A free-throw by freshman

Eric Mosley would cut the deficit to five; however, a long jumper by Chris Jones would give the home team the 37-30 lead at the half.
WT would make just two of its final 12 attempts from the field and one of its final eight before the break. In the first 20 minutes of play, WT went 9-for-26 (.346) from the floor and 3-for-11 (.273) from beyond the arc. The Rams would shoot an efficient 16-for-27 (.593) from the field.
Leading the way for WT at the half was Dumars with 10 points along with three rebounds. Gatewood would also add eight points with three boards and a steal. Topping all scorers was Mayfield with 13 points. Each team led for just over an identical nine minutes each in the first half.
In the Buffs' first possession of the second frame, Chavlovich would drain a 3-pointer for his first bucket of the night. Then senior
Antjuan Ball would go up with the power move working from the left side along the baseline, make the bucket and the ensuing free-throw after the foul. He would earn another trip to the line to make 1-of-2 to tie the game at 37 after WT's 7-0 run to open the half. Two free-throws on the Rams' next possession would put ASU back up 39-37 with 15:45 on the clock.
Both teams would slow down offensively over the next several minutes before a big triple by Marsell Holden got the home crowd back into the action. On the ensuing possession; however, Chavlovich would sneak around a couple defenders for a reverse layup to send WT into the next media timeout down 44-41 at 10:40.
ASU then extended the lead to seven again after the whistle then freshman
Tommy Gove grabbed his first points of the night with a big 3-pointer from the right corner. A few traded buckets would then send ASU to another timeout on the floor up 54-49 with just under seven minutes to go. The Rams would then bring back the lead to eight, going up 63-55 at the final media.
The Buffs would not be able to get much closer as they fell by the final score of 77-68.
WT finished the night just 21-for-55 (.382) from the field and 6-for-22 (.273) from long range. The Rams would be slightly better in each category at 25-for-50 (.500) from the floor and 4-for-12 (.333) from deep. The Buffs have been the only LSC team to stay within single digits of the Rams thus far this season.
Ball had a strong night as well for the Buffs with 14 points to go with three boards, two assists, a block and two steals. Gatewood would also be in double-figures with 10 points on the night. White would add nine points, nine rebounds, a block, assist, and steal. Leading all scorers was Jones for ASU with 25 points while Mayfield finished with a double-double, pouring in 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds.
With the loss, WT now falls to 38-23 in the all-time series with the Rams. The Buffs have now lost four-consecutive games in the series. What made the difference in tonight's matchup versus the 28-point defeat in Canyon earlier this season, was free-throw shooting and rebounding, both categories WT has struggled with this season. The Buffs made improvements in both between the two contests as they went 20-for-33 (.606) from the charity stripe with 33 rebounds compared to 9-for-22 (.409) and 27 back on Jan. 14.
WT will return to action this Saturday, Feb. 7, as it welcomes in Texas A&M-Kingsville to the First United Bank Center in Canyon, Texas.
