Box Score (Game 1)Box Score (Game 2)Season StatsLAS VEGAS, N.M. – The No. 10 West Texas A&M baseball team ran into an offensive buzz saw in the opening game of a doubleheader at New Mexico Highlands Friday afternoon. NMHU won the opener 11-2, but the Buffs battled back for a 3-1 victory in the nightcap. With the split, WT stands at 8-3 on the year, while NMHU is 5-4 heading into tomorrow's final game of the series beginning at 12 p.m. CT.
In the opener, WT took the early 1-0 lead as senior
Ryan March began the game with a leadoff walk. He scored on a senior
Jacob Caples double to left center for a 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived, however, as ENMU plated three runs in the bottom of the frame on a RBI double with the bases loaded and a two RBI single. The Cowboys added four more runs in the third for a 7-1 lead off WT senior starter
Tyler Gibson.
NMHU added three more runs for a 10-1 lead in the fourth and added a single in the fifth for 11-unaswered runs to that point. WT ended the run in the seventh as junior
Matt Cole doubled to right and scored on a single up the middle from junior
Trace Hansen for an 11-2 score.
Gibson fell to 1-1 on the year as he allowed nine hits, seven earned runs, with three walks and one strikeout. Phil Trujillo (1-1) earned the win in seven innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs while walking two and fanning five.
Joe Cervantes went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and three RBI. No Buffalo had more than one hit as NMHU belted out 15 hits in the game. The Cowboys entered the series hitting .385 and scored double figures all but one of their games this season to that point.
In the nightcap, the Buffs took the early lead once again – this time in the second inning as junior
Jace Reese singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. He then scored on a ground out by senior
Justin Hargrove for a 1-0 lead.
WT senior
Justin Disbro got out of a two on jam in the third with a big out at third on an attempted stolen base. He also got ou t of a jam in the fourth following a miscue and a double play in the fifth preserved the 1-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, senior
Heath Davis singled to left to begin the inning and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. A triple from Cole scored Davis for a 2-0 lead and Hansen replaced Davis at second for a RBI double and a 3-0 lead.
The Cowboys made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff walk and wild pitch put a runner at second with two out. A RBI double followed for a 3-1 score as WT senior
Kyle Olason relieved Disbro and got a ground out to end the game.
Disbro went 6.2 innings earning the win as he improved to 2-0 on the year, allowing seven hits, one earned run, three strikeouts and one walk. Olason earned the save.
