Season Statistics

LAWTON, Okla. – Senior Miles Gatewood of the West Texas A&M men's basketball team scored a career-high 29 points on Saturday afternoon, propelling the Buffs to a big 88-73 win over Cameron in Lawton, Okla. The Buffs now sweep the season series with the Aggies and improve to 16-9 overall and 6-5 in Lone Star Conference play. CU falls to 11-12 (3-8, LSC) with the loss.

Gatewood tallied his 29 points off of 8-for-14 shooting from the field. He also made 13 trips to the line on the afternoon and sank 11 of those attempts. He would finish also with five rebounds, all on the defensive end, four assists, and two steals.

Senior Antjuan Ball would also have a big night as well, recording his fifth double-double of the season, and 13th of his career, by grabbing 10 boards to go along with 12 points.

The Buffs led for nearly 38 of the 40 minutes on the hardwood on Saturday. They finished off shooting 27-for-52 (.519) from the field as a team and an impressive 9-for-22 (.409) from the perimeter. The Aggies would go 24-for-53 (.453) from the floor and 6-for-17 (.353) from beyond the arc.

Gatewood would score the first two buckets of the game to give WT a 5-0 lead from the start. That would turn into an 8-0 run as freshman David Chavlovich nailed a triple. That advantage would turn to a quick 11-3 lead in favor of WT as Chavlovich knocked another down on the following possession.

The Aggies would grab their only brief lead of the ball game as they hit a bucket at 8:36 in the opening half to make the score 23-22, capping off an 8-2 run for the home team. But a bucket by senior Tez Dumars would put the Buffs back on top as they never looked back.

Dumars would then open that lead back to seven with a 3-pointer with 30 seconds remaining, sending, WT into the locker room at the half up 40-33.

Gatewood would lead all scorers with 16 points at the break off of 5-for-9 shooting. Both Desmond Henry and Cameron Lee would find themselves in double figures at that point as well for CU, each with 11 points.

The Buffs would come out firing from all cylinders in the second half, grabbing their largest lead of the game at 17 heading into the first media timeout up 55-38. That would come from a 15-5 run.

With 9:50 on the clock, Dumars would take a trip to the line and make two free-throws to put WT up 67-55. Those points would move him up one more spot on WT's all-time career scoring list. He now has 1,177 career points after passing Damien Lolar (2005-'07), who previously held the spot with 1,175 points.

The Aggies were able to threaten late in the game after pulling back within single digits at the 9:05 mark after a big dunk by Deondre Ray. They would then come within four points of the Buffs three different times over the next five minutes of play; however, that would be as close as CU would come.

A 16-5 run would close the game for WT as it finished the Aggies and swept the season series with the 88-73 decision.

Chavlovich would finish the afternoon very strong for WT as he poured in 17 points off of 5-for-11 shooting from the floor, including 4-for-8 from long range. Dumars would end up with 14 points while freshman Carl White also added 12 to go along with six rebounds.

WT will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 18, for a big showdown with the No. 11 Texans of Tarleton State at the First United Bank Center (FUBC) in Canyon. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Live stats and a free video webstream will be available courtesy of West Texas A&M Athletic Media Relations.
