Antjuan Ball of the West Texas A&M men's basketball team grabbed his 10
th career double-double on Tuesday night as the Buffs downed Langston, 92-71, inside the First United Bank Center (FUBC) in Canyon, Texas. The win tonight now ends WT's non-conference slate this season as it improves to a 12-8 overall record.
Ball finished the night with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Buffs offensively and defensively. Senior
Tez Dumars also tallied 19 points along with three assists, two boards, and a steal. The Buffs went 32-for-63 (.508) from the field and 12-for-26 (.462) from beyond the arc. Tonight marks the ninth time this season the Buffs have drained at least 10 buckets from long range.
The Buffs opened up with the game's first two buckets to take an early 5-0 lead. Ball grabbed an early dunk running along the baseline after a smooth pass by freshman
Carl White on the opening possession. On the next play for the Buffalo offense, senior
Miles Gatewood drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Ball would get the opportunity to slam another one down shortly after to make the score 8-5 in favor of WT with 16:06 on the clock.
LU would be able to tie it up for the first time at the 10:18 mark, knotting the score at 18-18 after a triple by Renard Green. The Buffs would immediately answer; however, as they rolled to a 12-1 run starting with a layup by Gatewood. Two buckets from outside the perimeter would follow by White and junior
Garrett Brockman to give WT the 26-18 lead with just over six minutes to go. After an ensuing free-throw for the visitors, freshman
David Chavlovich, who leads the Lone Star Conference in 3FG made and 3FG per game, would knock down his first triple of the game.
WT would close out the half on a 24-8 run and would tally the eight of the final 11 points with two 3-pointers by Ball and Dumars surrounding a big dunk by junior
Jeff Bonner. The Lions would grow cold from the floor as they missed 13 of their final 15 shots of the half while the Buffs would convert five of their last seven field goals.
Ball led all at the break with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds, an assist, and a block. Gatewood would have eight points with two boards, two steals, and an assist while White finished the first half with three points, three blocks, three assists and a steal. The Buffs went 15-for-33 (.455) in the half and 7-for-16 (.438) from beyond the arc and made four of their final six from long range.
After an opening layup by Miles Eglin to start the second frame, the Buffs stormed to a 12-3 run that featured a couple of dunks by Ball and Gatewood followed by 3-pointers by Chavlovich and Dumars. That would extend WT's lead to 23, giving it the 54-31 advantage at 16:59.
The Lions would crawl back within 20 again just past the under-12 media as they made the score 63-46. They would then roll to a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 12 just under 10 minutes to play. However, the Buffs would quickly recover with an 8-2 run to extend the lead back to 19 after a triple by Brockman, making the score 77-58 with 7:00 left to play.
Ball would secure his second double-double of the season and 10
th of his career after pulling down a 10
th board off a missed free-throw with 5:17 remaining. Chavlovich would take the ball down the court and find Ball, flying and with outstretched arms, immediately for a big slam dunk in transition over a defender between him and the basket on the other end. WT would then go into the final media timeout up 83-68 shortly after but would end with a 21-point advantage, grabbing the 92-71 victory.
Gatewood would score 16 points for WT in the contest and added in five rebounds, three steals, a block, and a steal. Chavlovich would also hit double-figures in scoring with 11 along with four assists and two rebounds. White would have a very strong outing as well with nine points, six boards, four assists, three blocks and three steals.
Leading all scorers was Green from LU who poured in 23 points. Curtis Jones (15), Daniel Mulamba (11) and Eglin all added double-digit point totals. The Lions would go 25-for-61 (.410) from the field and 7-for-23 (.304).
With the win, the Buffs improve their home record inside the FUBC to 9-3 on the year and improve to 2-0 all-time against the Lions. The first meeting was an 84-54 WT victory during the 1993-'94 season.
WT will return to action this Saturday night, Jan. 31, as it resumes Lone Star Conference competition at Eastern New Mexico. Tipoff from Greyhound Arena in Portales, N.M. is set for 8:30 p.m. (CT).
