Buffs Down Newman at Home, 2-0, for Fourth Shutout of the Season

Box Score

Season Statistics

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team blanked Newman University at home, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas to earn its fourth shutout of the season. The Buffs were led by senior Vitor Cardoso who tallied his fourth goal of the season while also adding an assist on another score by sophomore Christian Suthers to improve to 6-2 on the year. With the loss, the Jets fall to 6-2-1 on the season.

WT held the advantage in shots on Saturday over the visiting Jets, 11-7, while also holding a tight edge in shots-on-goal, 4-3. The Buffs were also awarded eight corner kicks to the Jets' one. They tallied both goals in the first half less than three minutes apart to secure the victory.

Sophomore Patrick Satorie got the win in his sixth start and improves his record on the year to 4-2. He tallied three saves and recorded his third solo shutout of the season.

The Buffs had their first real scoring opportunity in the 11th minute as junior Austin Henderson sent a shot wide right after looking at an open net when beating the keeper off a long pass from midfield by junior George Beasley. Henderson would get an even better opportunity the following minute as he dribbled down into the close left wing and sent a missile into the left post but the Jets were able to recover and clear to prevent any rebound chances.

WT would have another excellent chance in the 19th minute of the first frame. Freshman Ombrai Oguoko was tripped up taking a cross down the middle just before the 18-yard box, resulting in a yellow card awarded to Newman defender Kevin Crafton. Cardoso took the ensuing free kick from 20 yards out but his attempt was blocked, setting up a corner for Henderson which was knocked out by the Jets' keeper Steven Hamersky.

After some quiet play in the midfield, the Jets answered with the game's first two shots-on-goal in the 34th minute. Lucas Hanson played the first attempt from the close left week, trying to sneak one inside the left post but WT sophomore keeper Patrick Satorie closed the gap for his first save of the afternoon. Kerbson Lubin then responded with a hard shot from 18 yards after a Hanson corner kick but his attempt was also stopped by Satorie.

Sophomore Christian Suthers then gave the Buffs the first-half advantage with his first goal of the season in the 37th minute. Cardoso would send in a cross from the far right wing allowing Suthers to chip the ball in the back of the net right over Hamersky's head from 15 yards out.

Cardoso would find himself on the scoring end of the Buffs' next goal. He would grab a rebound in center of the box and send a first attempt towards the net which would be blocked. The second rebound would fall right at Cardoso's feet for the opportunity to beat Hamersky near the left post. It would be his fourth goal of the season.

The Buffs led on the shot chart for the first frame of action, 7-5. They also held the advantage in shots-on-goal, 3-2. Both Cardoso and Henderson would have two attempts each.

WT allowed just two shot attempts in the second half to preserve the win while forcing four of its own.

Hamersky received the loss today and now falls to 3-1-1 on the year. He tallied two saves in today's contest and allowed two goals.

WT remains undefeated against NU in the all-time series with a 3-0 record.

The Buffs improve to 3-2 against Heartland Conference opponents this season and 4-2 when playing at home at The Pitch. They are also 3-1 on their current four-game home stretch.

WT will return to action next Thursday, Oct. 2, for another afternoon matchup, this time welcoming the Tigers of Fort Hays State University to The Pitch for a 3 p.m. kickoff. The Buffs are 4-1-1 all-time against FHSU while they grabbed two wins against the Tigers last season.
