Season Statistics

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team closed out its 2014 non-conference schedule with a 3-1 victory over Southern Nazarene on Monday night at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas. The Lady Buffs were led by junior Emily Krenek who tallied two goals, including the game-winner, to propel the Lady Buffs to 5-6 (1-2 LSC). With the loss, the Crimson Storm falls to 4-6 (2-1 GAC). Tonight's match was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

WT led SNU in total shots tonight, 15-13, and shots-on-goal 10-6. Leading the way for the Lady Buffs were senior Jessie Thomas with five and Krenek with three. Sophomore Nicole Kemper grabbed the win in goal and improves to 2-1 on the season. She picked up five saves and allowed one goal.

The Lady Buffs got off to a relatively slow start on Monday night at The Pitch but were able to put the visiting Crimson Storm away by midway through the first half. SNU grabbed a couple early chances in the opening five minutes of play. Hannah Robinson took the second attempt at the 5:10 mark, forcing Kemper to stretch out for a diving save on a ball aimed just inside the right post.

Junior Haley Girard and Thomas responded for the home team in the 15th and 17th minutes, respectively, as both sent shots into the hands of SNU keeper Natasha Fuentes.

Krenek would tap in the first of her two goals on the night at the 19:54 mark. Sophomore Brady Prescott dribbled through traffic into the box along the edge of the right wing and sent a centering ball straight to Krenek who beat Fuentes from the left wing with a strike just inside the left post.

Just 12 minutes later, Krenek found the net again for her second goal of the night and team-high sixth goal of the season. Her goal would be nearly identical to the first, this time with a cross by senior Jessie Thomas to the same spot, allowing Krenek to beat Fuentes over the left shoulder and again into the net inside the left post.

WT headed into the break with an 8-3 advantage in shots over the Crimson Storm while it placed seven of those attempts on target. Three came off the feet of Krenek while Thomas added two.

Barely over a minute into the second half, SNU would cut the Lady Buffs' lead to one. WT committed a foul outside the corner of the far left wing about 30 yards out at the 46:18 mark. Grace Self stepped up for the visitors to take the free kick and sank a shot over the reach of Kemper into the back of the net for her second goal of the year.

Only 47 seconds later, Thomas would respond with a goal for the Lady Buffs to increase the lead to 3-1. Prescott picked up her second assist of the evening as she sent a cross from the center of the box to Thomas on the close right wing who then grabbed the goal from eight yards outside the right post.

Fuentes received the loss for SNU and falls to 4-6. She tallied seven saves and allowed three goals in 90 minutes of action.

WT will return to action this weekend as it hosts No. 10 Angelo State and Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference action. The Lady Buffs will face the Rambelles on Friday evening, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. WT is 15-8-5 all-time against ASU. They lost both regular season matchups last season before defeating ASU 1-0 in the LSC Tournament Semi-Finals. WT will then play MSU on Sunday, Oct. 12 with kickoff set for 1 p.m. WT is 15-17-2 all-time against the Mustangs and dropped both regular season matchups in 2013 before playing to a 2-2 draw in the LSC Tournament Championship before being eliminated in a shootout. Live stats and a free video webstream will be available for both matches courtesy of West Texas A&M Athletic Media Relations.
