AT Texas Woman's 11-2-14 (Live Stats / Video / Tickets) Lady Buff Game Notes CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer made a late second-half push to pull within one of the Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce but fell in the end by a score of 2-1. With the loss, the Lady Buffs fall to 6-11 (2-7, LSC) and are now officially eliminated from Lone Star Conference playoff contention. The Lions improve to 11-5 overall and 6-3 in LSC play.
TAMUC came into Canyon on Friday night and when all was said and done, led in total shots 13-9 while placing eight of those attempts on target. For the Lady Buffs, sophomore
Karyn Forbes led the way offensively with four shots, once leading to WT's lone goal of the night and her first of the season. Sophomore keeper
Nicole Kemper suffered the loss and falls to 3-6 on the year after making five saves and allowing two goals. For TAMUC, Callie Ballard picked up the win and improves to 2-0. She allowed one goal and made tallied three saves.
The Lions put on the pressure early on in the first frame with a barrage of corner kick opportunities, each nicely placed by Savannah Henderson. TAMUC would get a couple of good looks on the first two, header attempts blocked and sent wide. Their best chance from the corner came in the 15
th minute as Madison Cordts nearly grabbed an empty netter but a WT defender stepped in for a team save.
The visitors would quickly grab the lead on the their next opportunity; however, as Henderson found the net for an LSC-leading 13
th time this season with a goal in the 20
th minute, giving the Lions the 1-0 advantage.
Senior
Jessie Thomas put up the Lady Buffs' first shot-on-goal of the game at the 30:00 mark. She received a quick pass from junior
Haley Girard outside the far right wing. Thomas was able to get foot on it to change the direction but Ballard read the play and stepped in for the save.
At the break, the Lions led in shots 8-3, while they placed an impressive five of those attempts on-goal compared to WT's one. Kemper would finish the half with three saves.
In the opening four minutes of the second half, sophomore
Karyn Forbes would get two quick shots off for the Lady Buffs but both would be deflected before getting a chance on the net.
Outside of a couple of wide attempts by Callie Annett, the next 20 minutes of the match remained very quiet and centered in the midfield. The Lions would then convert off a chance in the 69
th minute to grab an insurance goal. Henderson's corner would find Taylor Rhodes at the top of the box, allowing Rhodes to send a strike through traffic and into the middle of the net for the 2-0 lead.
Forbes would respond; however, in the 76
th minute to cut the Lions' lead to one. After receiving a pass outside the far right wing, she dribbled in and sent a strike from 25 yards out to beat Ballard near the top right corner. It would be Forbes' first score of the season.
With the loss, WT falls to 19-11-2 all-time against the Lions and split the season series after defeating them in Commerce earlier this season, 1-0, on Sept. 28
WT will return to action on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 2, as it welcomes in Texas Woman's to The Pitch to close out the regular season schedule. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Come out early to field for Senior Day as WT's two seniors,
Jessie Thomas and
Rhea Belgrave, will be honored prior to kickoff. The Lady Buffs are 11-3-2 all-time against TWU. WT won both meetings last season; however, dropped the first matchup earlier this fall, 2-1, in Denton.

TEXAS WOMAN'S AT A GLANCE: With two games left in the season, the Pioneers also find themselves on the outside looking in as they sit in fifth in the LSC standings. They currently own a 9-6-1 mark overall and a 3-4-1 record in conference play. After starting off hot this fall; however, TWU has only managed to grab two wins in its previous seven games. Before coming to Canyon on Sunday to close out the regular season, the Pioneers will face ENMU in Portales, N.M. on Friday 3 p.m.
TWU had no problem scoring throughout the first half of the season as it has tallied 33 goals so far to its opponents' 11. Though in the previous seven games, the Pioneers have managed to find the net just five times. Leading the way has been Natalia Diaz with team-highs in goals (10), assists (6), and points (26). She has been named the LSC's Offensive Player of the Week twice so far this season. The Pioneers have also seen excellent play in goal by Ariana Morrison who has started all 16 games and owns a .70 GAA and a .861 save percentage while playing nearly 1,500 minutes.
