Box Score Season Statistics CANYON, Texas – Freshman
Lucy Chalgren of the West Texas A&M women's soccer team scored the game-winning goal with just over a minute left in regulation to carry the team to a crucial Lone Star Conference home win over Midwestern State on Sunday afternoon at The Pitch in Canyon, Texas. With the win, the Lady Buffs improve to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in LSC play while the Mustangs fall to 6-2-5 (1-2-2).
"Our team started off a very tough weekend playing extremely well against a good Angelo State team on Friday so that definitely did some good things for us mentally heading into today's matchup," noted head coach
Chad Webb. "We did not play all too well for much of today's game but I think that confidence helped us get things done and get that late goal when we really needed it. We've got a lot to build off of from this weekend that should help us heading down the stretch in conference play."
Senior
Jessie Thomas would tap in the early goal to give the Lady Buffs a 1-0 advantage in the 18
th minute while MSU tied the game up shortly after. Chalgren would be the next to find the net at the 88:44 mark to send the Lady Buffs on to victory while handing rival MSU only its second loss of the season.
"I think this game and winning this way will definitely help our team as a whole," said Chalgren. "It should really light us up heading into a big rematch with Eastern later this week. I look forward to getting back to work and heading into the next game with this team."
WT held a slight edge in shots on the day, 10-9, though MSU would hold the advantage in shots placed on target with six to the Lady Buffs' five. Sophomore keeper
Nicole Kemper grabbed the win and improves to 3-2 after making five saves and allowing one goal. Courtney Burnette of MSU now falls to 6-2-5 on the year. She totaled three saves and let in two scores.
The Mustangs created some rhythm offensively right from the start with many chances coming from MSU's leading scorer Destinee Williamson. She started things off with a breakaway along right center in the 3
rd minute but her attempt sailed right into Kemper's hands for the early stop. MSU would grab three more shots in the next 10 minutes, placing two of them on target for Kemper.
WT would manage to score off its first shot of the game as it received a break in the 18
th minute. Thomas found some open space at the top of the 18-yard box and sent a missile into the upper top left corner of the net over the reach of Burnette to give WT the early 1-0 advantage. It would be Thomas's third score of the season.
It did not take long for the Mustangs to find the tying score as Williamson found the net at the 22:41 mark. She broke free through the defense near the top of the box and lifted a ball over Kemper's jump into the top right of the goal for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
At the break, the Mustangs led in shots, 7-4, while also holding the shots-on-goal advantage, 5-1. Williamson tallied three for the visitors while four Lady Buffs each place one on the stat sheet. Kemper finished the first 45 minutes with four saves.
The Lady Buffs came out of halftime carrying over some momentum. Thomas and junior
Dominique Premac were both able to generate some good looks on goal in the opening minutes. Premac's would be sent slightly high while Thomas's was stopped again by Burnette. Then in the 60
th minute, freshman
Lucy Chalgren placed a nearly perfect header on target off a cross from sophomore
Brady Prescott but Burnette was able dive towards the left post for the save.
As the clock was winding down in the second half, it looked very likely the game would be heading into extra time, something the Lady Buffs were all too familiar with last season, a feeling which the Mustangs now know this season after tying five contests. But late in the 89
th minute, the Lady Buffs attacked to put themselves in position to end the game and took advantage of the opportunity. Chalgren received a deflection on the close left wing and sent a high kick into the bottom of the crossbar which split through a cluster of players from both sides, landing just inside the goal line for the score. It would be Chalgren's first of the season and her WT career.
With the win, the Lady Buffs improve to 16-17-2 all-time against the Mustangs. WT now also goes up by a score of 4-1 in the second-annual Highway 287 Challenge Cup against MSU. WT received wins on Saturday in football (2 points) and volleyball (1 point) while the Mustangs grabbed a point with a double overtime win over the Buffs in men's soccer.
WT will return to action this Friday night, Oct. 17, for a rematch with LSC rival Eastern New Mexico, this time in Portales, N.M. The Lady Buffs are 10-5-1 all-time against the Zias; however, are winless in the previous three meetings, including a loss at home earlier this season, 1-0, on Oct. 3.
