2017 Outdoor: Earned 2nd Team All-Lone Star Conference honors after finishing second in the 5,000-meters at the LSC Championships in a time of 15:09.80. He also finished fourth in the championships in the 10,000-meters running 31:50.98. He ran a seasonal best time and provisionally qualifying time of 30:07.28 over 10,000m at the San Francisco Distance Carnival. That is also the third-fastest time in school history and ranked him 23rd in the nation. He finished second in the 5,000m at the West Texas A&M Invitational running an altitude adjusted time of 14:46.31.

2017 Indoor: Finished second in the 5,000-meters at the Lone Star Conference Championships in 14:47.47 earning Second Team All-Conference honors. He also finished fifth at the same championships in the 3,000-meters in 8:44.93. Ran the third-fastest 5,000m time in school history at the GVSU Big Meet Friday, 14:33.31, provisionally qualifying himself for the NCAA Championships. Ran a seasonal best time of 4:25.48 in the mile at the GVSU Big Meet Saturday. Finished fourth in the 3,000m at the Crimson & Gold Invitational running a seasonal best 8:37.95. Earned LSC All-Academic honors for the first time in his career.

2016 Cross Country: Finished his cross country career with a 199th place finish at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships at St. Leo where he covered the 10,000-meter course in 34:01.8. Finished 33rd at the South Central Region Championships covering the 10k course in 32:57 helping the Buffs punch their ticket to their fourth straight national championships appearance. Finished runner-up for the second straight year at the Lone Star Conference Championships earning All-Conference honors while covering the 8,000-meter course in 25:07.9. Was the top runner for the Buffs at the Border Classic and OSU Cowboy Jamboree. He finished sixth at the Border Classic running 15:42.3 for 5,000-meters while finishing 14th as an individual at the Jamboree running 26:29.5 for 8k.

2016 Outdoor: Finished 14th in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Championships running 31:34.34 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. He became the first WT athlete to represent the Maroon and White in that event. He earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors for the first time in his career in the 10,000m. He broke the school record and facility record running an impressive 29:38.99 at the Division II South Central Region Challenge to punch his ticket to the national meet. He won his first Lone Star Conference Championship after finishing second twice indoors in leading the 10,000m from start to finish to crossing the line in 31:15.30. He also finished second in the 5,000-meters at the same championships running 14:55.80. He opened his season running 30:07.65 in the 10,000m at the Raleigh Relays.

2016 Indoor: He finished second in the 3,000 and 5,000 meters at the LSC Indoor Championships earning All-Conference honors. He ran two of the three fastest 5,000 meters in school history including a provisional qualifying time in the 5,000 meters at the Indoor Gorilla Classic. His time of 14:41.33 is the second-fastest time in school history and ranked him No. 41 in the nation. He ran the third-fastest  5k (14:47.29) at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open in early December. Ran a personal best time of 4:21.30 in the mile at the Grizzly-Buffalo Clash in Alamosa, Colo.

2015 Cross Country: Finished 102nd at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in Joplin, Mo. covering the 10,000 meter course in a time of 31:26.5. Earned All-Region honors with his 13th place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional Championships (10K) in a personal-best time of 30:43.2. Was named Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference after finishing second at the LSC Championships covering the 8,000 meter course in 25:09.9. Finished 36th at the Chile Pepper Festival (8k) in a time of 24:39.8 and second at the Buffalo Stampede (8k) with a time of 25:49.7.

Iowa Central: Whalen was a nine-time NJCAA All-American while competing for Iowa Central Community College. He was part of Triton’s first ever NJCAA national championship cross country team in 2014. He was named the Algoe Award Winner in 2014, which is given to Iowa Central’s top male athlete. Ran personal best times of 31:11.96 (10,000m) and 14:48.27 (5,000m).

High School: Graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 2013, where he competed in the 5k in cross country and 1600m and 3200m events in track. Whalen was a three-time letter winner in cross country and track and field. Was a two-time state qualifier in cross country.

Personal: Born on August 2, 1995. Son of Mike and Karen Whalen. Has 11 siblings. Majoring in accounting at West Texas A&M.
