Biography

2020: Made his season debut in the season finale against Pittsburg State recording one tackle. 

2019: Featured mainly on special teams as a sophomore making 11 tackles (5 solo, 6 assisted) while also recovering a fumble. Made a season-high two tackles against Tarleton and Central Washington. Recovered his first career fumble on a kickoff in WT’s Wagon Wheel victory over Eastern New Mexico. 

2018: Was a force on special teams for the Buffs where he finished second in the nation in punt return touchdowns with 2 while recording 16 tackles (4 solo, 12 assisted) and a blocked punt. He recorded a season-high five tackles against Oklahoma Panhandle State on Sept. 9. Scored his first touchdown on Donevin Manuel’s blocked punt at nationally-ranked Central Washington followed by his own block and score in a win over Angelo State.

2017: Redshirted.

St. Pius X High School: Payne was rated as a two-star recruit by 247 Sports. He finished his two-year varsity career with St. Pius X with 73 total tackles, 25 solo tackles, six tackles for loss, one interception while causing one fumble. Earned first team all-district honors and second team all-state accolades. Named to the Honor Roll both semesters. Also competed in baseball, golf and track. Earned a silver medal at state in the 200m. 

Personal: Born June 23, 1998. Parents are Stephanie and Alex Payne. Has three siblings. Plans on majoring in sports and exercise science at WT.
