LUBBOCK, TEXAS – West Texas A&M Women's Soccer (1-2-2, 0-0-1 LSC) opened up Lone Star Conference (LSC) play Wednesday evening against Lubbock Christian and battled to a 1-1 tie on the road. Junior
Sienna Hurrell scored the only goal for the Lady Buffs in lightning quick time.
West Texas A&M wasted no time setting the tone in the game as they pressed the Lady Chaps back into their defensive half. As LCU made a play back to their keeper,
Sienna Hurrell continued to press on and would force the keeper into mishandling the ball. Hurrell would come away with the steal right in front of the goal and fire it in to give WT the early advantage. The Lady Buffs would get on the board in 16 seconds, one of the fastest goals in program history. The early goal was a big energizer for WT as they continued to push and control possession. The first 15 minutes saw the Lady Buffs tally two more shots on goal and a corner kick. WT nearly doubled their lead in the ninth minute but would have a goal called back for offsides which would also be reviewed and upheld. Defensively, the Lady Buffs were stout as they limited the Lady Chaps to two shots in the first 40 minutes of action. LCU ended the half with a late surge as they produced three shots with one landing on goal in the final five minutes of the half. WT held strong as they took their 1-0 lead into the break.
Moving into the second half, LCU carried over their momentum from the end of the first half and continued to hold possession and generate offense. Lubbock Christian would tie the game in the 63rd minute off a corner kick. They would play the ball short and cross a pass into the center where Kali Guy finished the chance for the equalizer.
Franciezca Blancaflor made a pair of key saves over the next seven minutes as she ensured the game stayed knotted 1-1. The Lady Buffs would settle in following the offensive wave from LCU and make one last push to try and get the additional two points in the standings. WT would get fouled just outside the box in the 81st minute where
Charo Rodriguez Fortea blasted a shot on the free kick, but had it saved by LCU goalkeeper Emma Wright on the quality chance. The Lady Buffs added two more shots and a corner kick in the final nine minutes but were unable to find the go-ahead goal. West Texas A&M would leave Lubbock, Texas with a 1-1 tie against the Lady Chaps to open LSC play.
Top Lady Buffs
- Sienna Hurrell scored her first goal as a Lady Buff in 81 minutes of action. She capitalized on her lone shot with one of the fastest goals in WT history. Hurrell is now up to three points on the year.
- Charo Rodriguez Fortea tallied three shots with two landing on goal in 90 minutes. This was a season-high in shots and shots on goal for Rodriguez Fortea and also here first game playing all 90 minutes this season.
- Franciezca Blancaflor started in goal and compiled four saves in all 90 minutes. Blancaflor has made 4+ saves in all but one game this season.
Notables
- West Texas A&M is now 3-3-3 all-time against Lubbock Christian.
- The Lady Buffs led the game in corner kicks (4-3) and saves (4-3).
- Ryann Davis and Rozlyn Rumsey played all 90 minutes on defense. This was Davis' third straight and fourth overall game playing 90 minutes while Rumsey went the distance for the first time this year.
- Sara Soto added a shot on goal in 71 minutes. Soto has exceeded 71+ minutes in all but one game.
- Riley Sims, Mollie Ferro, Jade Martinez, Bailee Ramirez, and Naya Megnin all recorded one shot. Sims, Ferro, Martinez, and Ramirez all played 74+ minutes with Martinez and Ramirez each logging 76 minutes.
- Samantha Solorzano played 73 minutes on defense. This was her third game exceeding 73+ minutes.
