CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M battled back for a win in Saturday's opening game of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader before falling in a nightcap pitcher's duel to the #9 UT Tyler Patriots at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The Buffs and Patriots close out the series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm. In Canyon.
Game 1 – West Texas A&M 4, UT Tyler 3
UT Tyler took an early lead to open the game in the top of the second inning as Tanner Chelette doubled to the gap in right center to score Tanner Hornback and Kaston Mason for the 2-0 lead. The Buffs would tie the game in the bottom of the second as
Anthony Picciano drove in
Tristin Thomas on a squeeze bunt followed by a
Jonluke Hobdy RBI single that plated
Jacob Police at 2-2.
UTT retook the lead in the fourth on a Cole Ketzner RBI single to left center for the 3-2 advantage. The Buffs would plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Thomas singled up the middle to score Hobdy followed by a
Tristan Menchaca RBI double for the 4-3 lead.
That's all the cushion that
Cade Griffin would need, moving to 5-0 on the mound as he allowed three earned runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in the complete game victory.
Game 2 – UT Tyler 3, West Texas A&M 2
The Patriots got on the board in the nightcap in the top of the second inning as Travis Bragg and Brock Bearden drew walks with the bases loaded for the early 2-0 lead. WT responded in the home half of the third on a Picciano sacrifice squeeze with one out to plate
Ronan Hella followed by a
Jake Alwine RBI single to score Menchaca at 2-2.
UT Tyler pushed across what would be the winning run in the top of the fourth on a Bearden RBI groundout with one out to plate Ketzner for the 2-1 advantage. WT wouldn't go down without a fight as they had runners on first and second in the seventh with one out before a ground ball double play ended the game at 3-2.
Nick Yeager claimed the loss (0-2) for the Buffs, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in his 6.0 innings of work.
