Second Half Comeback Sinks the Buffs in South Texas, 28-21

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M held a 21-0 lead early in the second half on Saturday night before the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville scored 28 unanswered points to claim a wild 28-21 Lone Star Conference victory on a stormy night at Javelinas Stadium.

The Buffaloes wasted little time getting in the scoreboard after the 90-minute weather delay as they marched 65 yards on 15 plays during the opening drive, capped off by a Brennan Ray five-yard touchdown pass from Knox Porter for the 7-0 lead.

WT's defense registered the first turnover of the game on Kingsville's ensuing drive as Ian Amegatcher picked off a pass and returned it inside the red zone, WT would add to their lead on the next play with a Joseph White seven-yard grad in the back of the endzone at 14-0.

The Buffs added to their lead on their first drive of the second half as Porter found Trace Clarkson on a 50-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0. Texas A&M-Kingsville would find an offensive rhythm later in the third quarter as Dawson Mills completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Edward Chumley followed by a one-yard rushing score by Chumley on TAMUK's next drive at 21-14.

The Javelinas would tie up the game late in the fourth quarter as a six-play drive that spanned 87 yards was capped off by a Mills 19-yard pass to Christian Kretz with 3:48 remaining. Kingsville would take their first lead of the game with just 18 seconds remaining, an 80-yard drive took 1:47 off the clock as Mills found Kretz in the endzone again, this time from 37 yards out to make it 28-21.

Porter completed 17-of-33 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns. Trace Clarkson led the Buffs with six catches for 100 yards and a score, Contae Cason and Tory Simmons carried the load in the backfield as the pair combined for 29 carries and 82 yards on the ground. Miles Hill led the way defensively for the Buffs as the Bixby, Oklahoma product registered 11 total tackles (nine solo) followed by Caleb Giles with nine and Eddy Mpela with seven.

The Buffs return to Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium next weekend as they host the UT Permian Basin Falcons with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. on Saturday in Canyon.
