ODESSA, TEXAS – West Texas A&M Women's Soccer (6-5-3, 5-3-2 LSC) extended their winning streak to five games Tuesday afternoon as they shutout UT Permian Basin 2-0.
Charo Rodriguez Fortea scored both goals while the defense did not allow a shot in the second half.
WT set the tone early with three shots (one on goal) and a corner kick through the first 13 minutes. The Lady Buffs stayed in their attacking zone for most of the half and consistently created scoring opportunities but could not find the back of the net. Defensively, West Texas A&M was strong and did not allow a shot until the 26th minute, which would be saved by
Franciezca Blancaflor. The Lady Buffs limited possession by the Falcons as they had few chances with possession in their attacking half. In the 38th minute, WT would be tested by a corner kick which resulted in a scrum deep in the box. UTPB had two good chances to get on the board, but Blancaflor made a pair of crucial saves during a five-second stretch to keep them off the board. The Lady Buffs would go into halftime tied 0-0 as they outshot the Falcons 15-4 in the half.
Moving into the second half, WT was able to break through almost instantly as they took a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.
Riley Sims would take a corner kick for the Lady Buffs and perfectly placed it right in front of the keeper.
Charo Rodriguez Fortea would leap for the ball and head it into the top of the goal just past the keepers' outstretched hand to break the tie. As they did in the first half, West Texas A&M continued to dominate possession with a consistent driving force of offense to push the Falcons back. The 66th minute would see WT double their lead as they had a free kick just outside the box. Rodriguez Fortea took the kick and fired a laser beam into the top right corner for her second goal of the game. While the Lady Buffs offense continued to produce, the defense shut down all opportunities to get on the board as they did not allow a shot in the second half. As a unit, WT moved cohesively and were able to stop any threatening chances by the Falcons in their defensive half. The score would finalize at 2-0 in favor of West Texas A&M as they won their fifth consecutive game.
