Last Second Free Throws Send #6 WT Home with a Win, 84-83

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M senior Karley Motschenbacher knocked down a pair of free throws with less than a second remaining on Thursday night as the #6 Lady Buffs extended their win streak to 18 games with a wild 84-83 Lone Star Conference win over the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds in Portales.
 
WT started strong in the first quarter with Kyla Kane hitting an early 3-pointer and adding two free throws to take an 8–2 lead at the 8:23 mark. The team maintained momentum with Claire Graham sinking another 3-pointer, extending the lead to 10–6. However, Eastern New Mexico responded by closing the gap and eventually taking the lead with a series of layups and a 3-pointer, making it 14–10 with 5:00 remaining.
 
The quarter saw a back-and-forth battle, with Henley West connecting on a 3-pointer to tie the game at 21–21 with 2:24 left. Despite this effort, ENMU regained control, ending the quarter on a scoring run, and led 28–21 at the close.
 
The Lady Buffs began the second quarter by capitalizing on Eastern New Mexico's turnovers, with Karley Motschenbacher's steal at 8:05 leading to a crucial basket. Despite Eastern New Mexico's brief scoring surge, the Lady Buffs responded with efficiency from the free-throw line, as Taytum Bell converted four consecutive free throws, cutting the deficit to 34–27.
 
Midway through the quarter, Motschenbacher hit a pivotal 3-pointer at 5:25, narrowing the gap. Randi Harding further contributed with a three-pointer, bringing the Lady Buffs within five points. In the closing seconds, Henley West's jumper reduced Eastern New Mexico's lead to a single point, ending the quarter 40–39 in favor of the home team.
 
WT opened the third quarter with a crucial jumper from Kane at 9:13, narrowing the gap early. Graham then sparked a key stretch, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers at 8:07 and 7:17 to reclaim the lead. Defensive pressure resulted in a steal by Graham at 6:54, further tightening the contest.
 
Bell contributed significantly with a defensive rebound and subsequent layup at 2:39, giving WT a narrow edge. Motschenbacher's free throws at 2:18 extended the lead. Despite ENMU closing the gap with a late 3-pointer, Bell's free throw at 1:14 secured a slim advantage. In the final moments, the Hounds tied the game with two free throws at 0:07, leaving the score at 61–61 to close the quarter.
 
The Lady Buffs began the fourth quarter with a determined effort, tying the score at 63 after a jumper from Motschenbacher. Despite a brief setback with ENMU pulling ahead, Harding responded with a crucial three-pointer, maintaining a close contest.
 
Midway through the quarter, Kane capitalized on free throw opportunities following a pair of technical fouls, converting all four attempts to give WT a 76–74 lead. The teams exchanged leads in a tightly contested final stretch, with Graham's layup ensuring the Lady Buffs stayed competitive.
 
In the game's closing moments, the Lady Buffs faced a narrow deficit but remained resilient. With only seconds remaining, Motschenbacher calmly sank two free throws to secure an 84–83 victory, capping a tense and hard-fought quarter.
 
Kane scored 16 points, converting 7 of 8 free throws, and recorded three steals. Motschenbacher finished with 19 points, made 12 of 15 free throws, and collected seven rebounds. Graham added 11 points with three 3-pointers and recorded two steals. West contributed nine points and posted two blocks.
 
The Lady Buffs return to the court next Thursday night as they welcome the UT Tyler Patriots to the First United Bank Center with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. in Canyon.
