No. 1 Lady Buffs Split with No. 7 Angelo State on Sunday

SAN ANGELO, Texas – West Texas A&M softball battled No. 7-ranked Angelo State to a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon. The Rambelles powered past the Lady Buffs in game one 7-0 before WT used the long ball to defeat Angelo State 6-2 in game two.
 
The Lady Buffs end the regular season with an overall record of 50-4 with a 40-4 record in Lone Star Conference play while Angelo State enters postseason play with a 43-11 overall record. With the win, WT earns a share of the Lone Star Conference regular season title and await the results from other games around the league.
 
Following the conclusion of today's games, the Lone Star Conference will announce the field and location of the 2025 Lone Star Conference tournament.
 
THE BASICS:
Game 1 Score: #7 Angelo State 7, #1 West Texas A&M 0
Pitching: (W) Cheyenne Floyd (24-5); (L) Emilee Boyer (24-3)
The Rambelles took an early lead in the bottom of the first as a one-out single from Erin Plunkett came in to score on Laylonna Applin's RBI double. After the early run, Emilee Boyer escaped the inning without allowing more damage.
 
Angelo State added to its lead in the bottom of the second when a single and a walk set up a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. A sacrifice fly in foul territory allowed the lead runner to score and bring the Rambelles' lead up to 2-0. With two outs, a single into left brought home the runner from second before the Lady Buffs tagged the runner out at third.
 
The WT pitching staff held Angelo State quiet until the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and third, the Rambelles sent the runner on first. After the Lady Buffs looked to catch the runner off third, a throw to second base went to the fence to score both players. Angelo State would put the game out of reach as a two-RBI double with the bases loaded made the difference 7-0.
 
THE BASICS:

Pitching: (W) Heidi Vortherms (18-1); Amelia Hatthorn (12-4)
The Lady Buffs struck first in game two after a scoreless first inning. A Heaven Moreno lead-off single started the frame before Halie Stoneking replaced Moreno on a fielder's choice. Trinity Kuntz powered a single up the middle to put more traffic on the bases with one out. The Rambelles looked to escape the inning on a lineout to third, but the throw to second came too late for a double play. With two outs, Emily Liskai lined a 2-2 pitch over the left-field fence for a go-ahead three-run home run.
 
Angelo State cut into the lead in the bottom of the third inning as a single and a walk put two runners on. A wild pitch moved the pair of Rambelles up 60 feet where an RBI groundout from Applin scored Angelo State's first run. With the tying run at the plate, Heidi Vortherms forced a flyout to Stoneking in left to end the frame.
 
WT pulled away late in game two with three runs on four hits. The frame started with a lead-off single from Kuntz followed by an opposite-field two-run home run off the bat of Avery Cannon. Angelo State recorded a pair of outs, but Kiley Avery kept the inning alive with a single to center. The Lady Buffs plated their final run of the game when Abby Howell went the other way for an RBI double into the gap.
 
In the bottom of the frame, the Rambelles started their side with a lead-off single, forcing a WT pitching change. After the change, a walk put another run on the bases where an RBI single from Applin. On the single, a WT error allowed the lead runner to come in to score from second. After a passed ball, Vortherms retired the next two hitters, putting the Lady Buffs one out away from victory. On a 2-2 count, Vortherms forced a fly out to center to end the game.
